Behrend battled to the end, but just could not pull out the victory as Frostburg sophomore Adam Fletcher scored 52 seconds into the overtime to give Frostburg the win and their second AMCC title in three years. Behrend won the tournament last year beating Frostburg, 2-1. Although the Lions lost in the title game of the AMCC Tournament, they were picked as the sixth seed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). This marks the first time Behrend has been in this tournament. The loss in the AMCC tournament gave Behrend a 10-9-1 record for the year, but the record is a little misleading since Frostburg, which finished 15-4 for the year, had to take Behrend to overtime just to score the only goal of the game. Tommy Sieg, who has been outstanding all year, made seven saves in the game, but it wasn’t enough. Fletcher took a pass from senior Kirk Gibson who had dribbled into the right-hand corner of the field and deflected the ball into the left corner of the goal. On the offensive side, Behrend was able to get five shots on goal, but Frostburg goalie Mike Pregnall proved strong in the net, stopping all five shots he faced. The opening game against La Roche on Nov 3 proved much different. La PHOTO BY BECKY WEINDORF Tommy Sieg kicks the ball against Western Maryland. Men’s water polo finishes up disappointing first season by Douglas Smith sports editor The men’s water polo season wrapped up their first season as a var sity team at Penn State Behrend this past weekend. The team could not find a way to win a match this season, but they gave it their all in the inaugural season. The season finished up at the Southern Division Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy. They played tough competition in Princeton, Wash ington and Jefferson, and Johns Hopkins. Behrend lost to Princeton 14-0 in the first game at the championships. This was followed by a 12-1 loss to Wash ington and Jefferson. Behrend played Washington and Jefferson four times this year. Coach Josh Heynes was the assistant at Washington and Jefferson last year. The final game at the South ern Championships was against Johns Hopkins, ending in a 9-2 loss. Coach Heynes would like to send a note of appreciation to his team. He stated, “the entire team stood out in my mind. If you took a look at them at day one; when they had no idea what water polo was, couldn’t catch the ball, couldn’t pass; some could not even swim. And now take a look at them. They pass and catch great, and play well. They can swim an entire 28 min utes of a game, get beat up and keep going in for more. People have to re alize that they are playing against al ready established Division 111 teams and are even playing Division I and II Sport Roche was never in the game with Behrend, as the Lions rolled to a rather easy 6-0 win. Behrend gained revenge for La Roche’s 2-0 victory earlier in the season by scoring five goals in the first half alone. Junior Dan Falk started off the scoring against La Roche with a free kick from 20 yards out in the ninth minute. Nine minutes later, senior forward Dave Kowalczyk added his seventh goal of the season with an assist from James Martin to put Behrend in front 2-0. Sophomore Mike Fry then recorded a hat trick, all on headers, to put the game out of reach. Fry’s first goal was a pass from Ran Ohl in the 34 lh minute of play. The same tandem then repeated their performance eight minutes later. As time was expiring in the first half, freshman Andy Laver lofted a pass in front of the goal that Fry was able to head past La Roche goalie Kevin Cummings. To add injury to insult, La Roche defender Jeff White put the ball in his own net in the 54 ,h minute as he attempted to clear the ball away. Behrend had 23 shots on goal while La Roche only had 6. Sieg made four saves in the game before being replaced by Jacob Hordych. On Wednesday, Behrend hosted the first round game of the ECAC tournament, playing the third seed team. Western Maryland. Western Maryland also lost to Frostburg earlier in the year with a score of 2-1. On paper the teams were evenly matched However, Behrend defeated Western Maryland 4-1. James Martin teams, which most athletic teams don’t do.” Despite all the losses for the team this year, there are some bright points to the season. Coach Heynes said, “good points that we got out of the season are many. First the team learned what PHOTO BY BECKY WEINDORF The men’s water polo team is looking forward to the new ARC instead of practicing at Harbor Creek High School next year. Mark Szewczykowski kicks through the ball during the ECAC playoff game scored in the 24 lh minute for the first goal of the game and Mike Fry scored about 20 minutes later. Jason Falk and Dan Falk scored later in the second half. Ryan Ohl had two assists on the day. Behrend mustered nine shots on goal to Western Maryland’s five shots on goal. The ECAC Tournament initially consisted of six teams with the top two seeds getting byes for the first round. Gettysburg College is the first seed. Muhlenburg College is the number two seed and will now face Behrend on Saturday, November 11 lh at Gettysburg. Gettysburg College will face the winner of today’s matchup between Wilkes University and Washington College. The championship game will be played on Sunday. Mike Fry leads the team this year with 12 goals and 26 points. Dan Falk and James Martin are tied for second in points with 18. Ohl leads the team with six assists. Tommy Sieg has made 130 saves on the year and that translates to 1.45 goals against average. He has tallied six and a half shutouts on the year. Four players also made the AMCC All-Conference team for the 2000 college water polo is all about; both the mental and extremely physical aspects. What I got out of the season was learning a lot of patience and dealing with losing games instead of winning. Like I tell the team, the only easy day was yesterday.” Mark Ostrzeniec led the team in season. Junior defensemen Chad Droz was rewarded for his quiet play by being named on the team. Martin capped his brilliant career at Behrend by being named to the team as a midfielder. Mark Szewczykowski joined Martin, who was co-MVP of the conference last year. Dan Falk was selected as one of four forwards on the team. Tommy Sieg and Behrend plays Muhlenburg College tomorrow. most of the major categories. Ostrzeniec had 34 goals coming off of 91 attempts. He also led in shoot ing percentage with 27%. Adam Demarco led in assists with 15. He also led the team in steals with 59 and turnovers with 82. In goal, Brian Vallor led the team with 43 saves. SECTION D stseason freshmen Kris Bauer were put on the honorable mention list. Coincidentally, the MVP of the league was Kirk Gibson; the man that set up the play that allowed Frostburg to claim victory in the AMCC championship game. This led to a blocking percentage of 29.6%. The team will now look to staying in shape for the next season, in which the Athletic and Recreation Complex will be complete. Many of the men on the team have joined the new swim ming team to help their workout schedule. The team is also planning an open pool night so that the Edinboro, Gannon, and Behrend teams can get together to play pick up games. Adding to this point, Coach Heynes stated, “next season we are looking forward to having our own pool to practice at and to bring in a great re cruiting class to take us to the next level. We are also looking forward to having some games here on campus. We are also going to increase the train ing level and expectations of the team. We have many recruits who are look ing at us and some that have already been accepted and plan on attending Behrend. Others are still on the bor der but hopefully with some Recruit ing weekends and the new facility we can bring them here. Plus Pennsylva nia water polo states are now over and we can now bring in those athletes to come and take a look at us.” The team played 23 matches in six different tournaments and failed to secure a victory. Coach Heynes firmly believes that the scores do not show the team’s real improvement. He sug gests not writing the team off yet and just waiting until next year.
