The Fall Leadership Conference will be held on November
11-12 at Peek N’ Peak. The theme for this year’s conference is
“Skills You Need to Succeed.”
This year the conference will be run differently than in the
past. Those organizing the conference are looking for students
to demonstrate their leadership skills by presenting a topic at
one of the group sessions.

DR. BEAUMONT KICKS OFF PROVOST’S SERIFS
John Beaumont, associate professor of engineering, will present the first
lecture in the 2000-2001 Provost’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The
Behrend College. His address, “Building a Bridge Among Faculty, Students,
and Industry,” will be presented on Monday, November 13, at noon in the
Reed Union Building Lecture Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Beaumont received the newly created 2000 Council of Fellows Faculty
Outreach Award for his leadership in the development of two Penn State Erie
outreach centers, the Plastics Technology Deployment Center and the Plastics
Computer-Aided Engineering Center, which provide advanced technical
services and process improvement for the plastics-related industry in
northwestern Pennsylvania. He continues to work through these outreach
centers to assist regional manufacturers.
Each year the Penn State Behrend Council ot Fellows presents its Faculty
Research Award and Excellence in Teaching Award to taculty who exhibit
outstanding efforts in these areas. This year, the Council also established
the Faculty Outreach Award, presented to a facult
for outstanding service to his or her community and
profession
The winners of these three awards are then invited
in the Provost's Speaker Series. Other award winners
will be speaking this year include Excellence in

Tower Brass Quintet, Reed Wintergarden
LOGAN SERIES FEATURES TOWER BRASS QUINTET
Music at Noon: The Logan Wintergarden Series will continue
with a performance by the Tower Brass Quintet on Tuesday,
November 14, at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Guests
are invited to bring a brown-bag lunch to the noontime concert,
which takes place in the Wintergarden of the Reed Union
Building. All performances in the Logan Series are free and open
to the public.

The Quintet was founded in
1979 and currently includes Brian Bushong and Larry Herman,
trumpet; Daniel Saygers, trombone; David Saygers, tuba; and
Bernice Schwartz, hom. Skilled as teachers and arts professionals,
the group has performed at the International Brass Chamber Music
Competition in Hungary, with the Baltimore Symphony, and has
collaborated with several premiere brass chamber ensembles,
including the London, Budapest, Annapolis, and American Brass
Quintets.
Each Tower Brass program is thoughtfully planned for a mix
of entertainment and discovery, featuring specific programs for
the intended audience.

Brandi Chastain, a key member of both the U.S. Women's Olympic and
World Cup soccer teams, will speak at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College,
on Thursday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Reed Union Building Commons.
Chastain became an instant international celebrity upon her game-winning
penalty kick in the 1999 World Cup finals. She was a member ot the gold
medal-winning U.S. Women’s National Team in the 1996 Centennial Olympic
Games, and played - - every minute of the

Award-winning author Marilyn Krysl continues the 2000-2001
Creative Writers Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrcnd
College, with a poetry and fiction reading on Wednesday, No
vember 15, at 7 p.m. in the Reed Union Building Lecture Hall.
Her presentation is free and open to the public.
Krysl is the author of seven books of poetry and three volumes
of fiction, including How to Accommodate Men. Her most re
cent book of poetry, Soulskin , was published by the National
