Steinbrenner...Oh, the hypocrisy
Mets, because who in New York really
cares about the Mets anyway?
5.) And the final part of the Yankees
Five-Step Plan to Rebuild a World
Out of Bounds
Series Team that Doesn't Really Have
to Win, would be to sign John Rocker.
Jason Snyder Oh yeah...it's no joke. The Yankees
might not have to win but surely they
5 1 1 / 4 , would have to get the most media
coverage in all of baseball.
So the plan is ready in case New York
doesn't win. But all sarcasm aside, George
Steinbrenner knows that "losing isn't an
option."
The Yankees wouldn't have gone after
every player rumored to want to be traded
if they didn't "have to win." Denny
Neagle, David Justice and Jose Canseco
wouldn't have all been added to the richest
line-up in baseball. And Mo Vaughn and
Manny Ramirez wouldn't be on the Yanks'
want list if they didn't "have to win."
Teams like the Kansas City Royals and
the Montreal Expos could make an
argument about not having to win for the
the last set of words that you would expect
to hear from a team owner that has $ll2
million dollars worth of professional
baseball players taking the diamond almost
every night? Things you might expect the
owner to say would be, "losing is not an
option," "second place is the first loser" or
Vince Lombardi's famous words, "winning
isn't everything...it's the only thing."
Well, Yankee owner George Steinbrenner
has thrown us for a loop. Rivaling the
famous words of Lombardi are
Steinbrenner's thoughts of this 2000 playoff
season..."we don't have to win." And you
know? He's right. The Yankees don't have
to win. In the famous words of my 6' h grade
elementary teacher, "no one has to do
anything in life, hut die. - As harsh its that
sounds, she was right. It's the only
requirement
But let us picture the world with a Yankee
team that didn't win. Because according to
Steinbrenner, they don't have to.
I.) The Yankee budget on players will
go higher than Steinbrenner's ego.
2.) The Yankees will trade to get
Randy Johnson and Ken Griffey Jr. for 10
players to be announced at a later date.
3.) Joe Torre would he fired, replaced,
and re-hired until the cycle is finally
successful.
4.) There would he a New York
merger that would revamp the Yanks'
starting line-up with the top five New York

Matt Lawton feels the pressure of a low
payroll, but proves that teams like the
Minnesota Twins can still be exciting too
simple reason that they can't compete with
teams like New York, Atlanta and
Cleveland. But Steinbrenner crossed the
line when he made his ludicrous comment.
It's hard to determine why he uttered
those words. The only explanation is
"pride." I mean, how much fun would it he
to beat the Yankees that realize they "don't
have to win?" The satisfaction one gets in
beating the Yankees is based on the fact that
no one should realistically have a chance
against the star-studded team. So when
Steinbrenner says it would be okay for a
team to beat him, he is saying that it
wouldn't be a surprise if it happened.
It's just mind games. The man knows his
team isn't as ready as they should be, so
he's, in a sense, making excuses for them. I

mean, how embarrassing would it be for
"moneybags" himself to say that he has a

then come up short? Sorry George. We all
know the Yankees have to win. Because

they didn't.
