Penn State Behrend's women's
tennis team had a busy schedule this
past week, playing three consecutive
days, and extended their conference
record to 6-0. On September 30,
Behrend took control and beat Penn
State Altoona 8-1. The next day
Behrend aced Pitt-Greensburg
winning 9-0. Behrend then played
on October 2 against Edinboro,
winning a close match 5-4. Coach
Barger said, "Everyone was on top
of their game for these last three
matches. Becky Snyder, who is our
number eight player, stepped into
the number 6 position, and did a

Hoffman looks to experience for end of cross country season

It was a near perfect day for a cross
country meet Saturday, September
30th. With the sun shining and the
temperature in the low sixties, the
men's and women's cross country
team traveled to Frostburg to run in
the Frostburg Invitational. The men
finished 8 out of 19; the women came
in at 13 out of i 7.
"These guys are really coming
along. This was the fastest average for
our top five that we've ever had, and
they're getting better each week," said
Coach Hoffman, of his men's team.
Dennis Halaszynski was the first
Behrend runner to cross the finish line
with a time of 27:38.0. He finished

great job for us. Jen Morrow and

exceptionally well, winning all of their
singles matches."
As the women's tennis team
continues their successful year, they
look ahead to the most exciting part
of the season: the playoffs. Penn State
Behrend has won twenty conference
matches in a row. They have five
matches left this year before the
AMCC's. Barger said, "We are
preparing for the playoffs by playing
a couple of non- conference foes."
With returning players Julie
Leininger, Jamie Brubaker, Angela
Albertson, Jen Morrow, and Christine
Chan, all Ist team all AMCC last year,
leading the way to the playoffs, Penn
State Behrend looks for the fourth
consecutive AMCC first place win.
Barger stated their advantage is
"having the experience with veteran
players who knows what it takes to
18th among over 150 runners. Next
to cross the line for Behrend was
Sohrab Moeini. Moeini finished 25th
with a time of 27:51.0. The Behrend
runners finished Bth out of 19 teams,
while host Frostburg finished 10th.
Also running for Behrend Saturday
were Kevin Ritzert, Chuck Orton,
Matt Grimmke, Clint Altman, Mark
Suroviec, Carl Alberico, and Greg
Cooper.
"I thought everyone all the way
through from 1-9 ran well. As a result
we were able to heat Frostburg for the
first time in program history,"
Hoffman said.
The Behrend women's team also
ran Saturday, the 30th. Andrea Sanko,
Deidre Garrity, Kathy Perry, Bandi
Napenas, Tina Rubay, and Betsy Voigt

win. Playoff matches are tougher,
because if you lose, there are no
more matches. However, my
players simply love to play the
game, so they treat regular season
and playoff matches the same. The
key to success in the playoffs is to
not be too confident. Just play your
game and never be too sure of
victory?'
"Our players will to win is our
biggest strength, and we have
players that hate to lose, which
makes them tough to beat in the
stretch. All our players care about
each other and cheer each other onto
victory. I think that is what makes
the difference when a match is
close," said Barger.
"Penn State Behrend is the team
to beat in the playoffs."

Behrend.
"We had really strong races from
Andrea Sanko and Deidre Garrity. We
were a little off after that-just a bad
day, thats all," commented coach
Hoffman regarding his women
runners
Even on an "off" day, Behrend's
women's team was competitive.
Sanko and Garrity both recorded
times under 21 minutes with time's
of 21:01.00 and 21:24.00
respectively.
"We'll be fine, and I believe we'll
run even better at the AMCC meet in
4 weeks (also held at Frostburg)
because of this experience," said

Water polo continues to test the waters
The men's water polo team
continues to struggle in their short
season. The NCAA Division 111

around the corner. The team
continues to tweak with their
performance in regular season games.
The men's water polo team lost in
overtime to Villanova. For the second
time this season, they fell to
Washington and Jefferson and Grove
City. They also lost to Johns Hopkins.
In the strongest showing of the
season, the water polo team took
Villanova to overtime only to lose 14-
