President Spanier delivers State of University Address by Liz Hayes news editor Last Thursday. September 8. President of the University Graham Spanier delivered his annual State of the University Address to the audience gathered in the Eisenhower Auditorium in University Park. This fall marks the sixth year of Spanier's tenure at his current position. Most of our increase is in upper-division students at our Commonwealth locations. Our campuses are precisely following our plans to expand selected baccalaureate programs, [and] to enhance service to Pennsylvania's communities." Spanier also made brief reference to Penn State Erie's physical growth the past year and planned growth in the future in the form of new buildings. Spanier then spoke of some of his concerns for the University. One of the largest he mentioned was the "We" and "They" phenomenon that frequently occurs within college administration. Spanier said that while he does not think this is as great a problem at Penn State, he does feel that if such a trend continues it will be extremely detrimental to the "We must, I regret to say, continue to plan for tuition increases that adequately support the level of quality worthy of the Penn State name. I reiterate my philosophy that quality must be put first, even if it means tuition increases that exceed inflation. In return, we pledge to seek increased student aid to mitigate the financial impact for our students." University. He remarked on his disturbance at the fact that he is more often asked about tuition increases and faculty workloads than he is about the "quality and competiveness of programs."
