) \\ FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2000 Lions to host invitational this weekend by Jason Snyder editor-in-chief The Behrend men's and women's cross country teams will host their third annual Behrend Lions Cross Country Festival this Saturday, September 16 at the Behrend cross country course on campus. The Invitational will be the largest in the area with 17 teams participating, adding several more teams from the event in past years. Behrend coach Rich Hoffman feels "this is an exciting opportunity for our teams to compete against some excellent runners here on our home course. It's been great to see the growth in our meet and we hope we can continue to develop our course and accommodate the meet as the campus changes. It's a great way to bring people to campus and show them the special character of our campus." Teams participating in the meet will include La Roche, Pitt-Bradford, Gannon, Case Western, Notre Dame College of Ohio, Cuyahoga Community College, Grove City, Westminster, Clarion, Medaille, D'Youville, Thiel, Geneva, Washington & Jefferson, Allegheny, Hilbert and Mercyhurst. The festival will begin with a high school meet at 9:00 a.m., and will be followed by the collegiate meets at 11:00 a.m. The men's team will enter the meet after an eighth place finish at the California, Pennsylvania Invitational on a humid day last Saturday. The Lions were paced by Dennis Halaszynski who placed 11th with a time of 29:15, and a 16th place finish by Sohrab Moeini at 29:46. Behrend's Kevin Ritzert finished slightly behind with a time of 30:18. "We're making progress," said Hoffman. "Now, the key is to bring two or three guys up closer to them and then we'll be in business. We'll get there, it's just going to take time." Behrend seniors Tyler Travis and Greg Cooper will be back from injury for the meet this weekend which should benefit the Lions. The women are also making progress after a promising 9th place finish at California, PA this past weekend. Lyndsey Boor led the Lions "with a super race," said Hoffman. "Our depth really showed through. I'm pleased and excited about what they can do and we're looking forward to a great home meet this weekend." Coach Hoffman is also excited about the Behrend course that will be used for the weekend's events. "We think our course has a lot to offer, and we have received great feedback from other athletes and coaches, which is encouraging." He added, "our course combines a nice mixture of open fields, wooded trails, log jumps, and some great uphills. If it's raining, the runners will even have a small creek to navigate. We really try to create a true cross country experience." The Festival will culminate on Sunday with the Behrend Lions Prowl SK. The event will start at 9:00 a.m., with pre-registration starting at 7:30 a.m. Looking for Improvement by Abby Long assistant sports editor Head volleyball coach Cindy Jacobelli is expecting a little bundle of joy soon. She has been on mater nity leave while her husband, Greg, has been taking over the team. How ever, she is going to come back to a team that needs improvement. After their match against Fredonia the women's volleyball team is 3-7. A few of the matches have went to the fifth game, so it is not to say that the team hasn't been competitive. How ever, at the Allegheny Tournament the volleyball team won only one game in four matches. The women move on, hoping to sal vage their season. Next on the slate is Buffalo State on September 19. It is a home game. After that, the women's volleyball team will start Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Con ference play at Lake Erie on Septem ber 21. They will have a little bit of a breather after that until September 27 when they will travel to La Roche. From there they will be heavy into AMCC conference play. The confer ence play will provide plenty of op portunity to make up for the early losses.
