Cuban American nobodies: you can’t save Elian
Despite the homerun chase of 1998
between McGwire and Sosa, and the
end of the century run of the New
York Yankees in last year’s World
Series, Major League Baseball is on
its way to a popularity crash similar
to the one it suffered in the mid 1990 s
when the players went on strike. Yes,
Michael Tejera and Mike Lowell and
some other washed up Cuban has
beens sat out a game. I’m afraid the
only way we can save baseball now
is if...they return Elian to his rela
tives?
Unfortunately, the Cuban-Ameri
can baseball players didn't realize
until it was too late that no one cares.
We’ve already seen the Cuban-
Americans in Miami make fools of
themselves with their distasteful pro
tests. And now, because baseball
players have decided to protest...

Wait a minute; what exactly are these
players protesting? I don’t think it
was MLB Commisioner Bud Selig
that made the decision to send in the
INS to rescue Elian from his kidnap

Hey, I’m going to stop writing
sports editorials for the Beacon until
Elian is stolen from his father again.
Then maybe, because Bill Clinton

and Janet Reno enjoy my writing so
much, they will ship Elian Fed-Ex
back to the criminal relatives in
Florida.
Just like they’re going to send him
back now because a bunch of base
ball nobodies decided to sit out a
game. For some reason, I don’t think
Reno watches baseball or even cares
that players decided to hurt their
teams’ chances of winning by watch
ing from the dugout.
OK. I’m done with the sarcasm and
down to business.
We all know the Elian controversy
has created such a stir in this country
over the past few months. And be
fore I begin to share my views about
the issue, as you should be clear with
them from the sarcasm above, I feel
it’s necessary to state what an
athlete’s role should be in a case like

We already have watched Cuban-
Americans show their disgust in this
whole ordeal. Crazed maniacs run
ning and screaming through the cit
ies. The last thing we need now are
“mature” baseball players pouting
about something that doesn’t even
affect them.
I’m not saying athletes shouldn’t
be allowed to protest in some capac
ity. But protest in a manner that is
respectable. These protests by play
ers this past week have been confined
to the baseball stadiums in which
they play. It has only affected their
teams’ performances, not Janet
Reno’s decision.
If these players are smart enough
to make the decision to come to
America to play, they should have
some level of intelligence that would
