Behrend. The
center will add
to the College’s
twelve other applied research
centers in promoting research
efforts among the faculty and in
providing outreach services to the
community.
The Center for Advanced
Metals Processing has been
promoted and encouraged by the
members of a metalworking CEO
group convened by the college in
1999. Dr. L. Ken L.. Saunders,
assistant professor of mechanical
engineering, has led the center’s
development and will serve as its
director.

metals processing industries in the
region.
The Center for Advanced Metals
Processing will initially support the
metal-cutting industries, and it has
the capability for
future support of
the forging,
foundry, and
powered metal
industries. The
center will
provide support
for day-to-day
procedures that
may not be cost

companies to

house, such as
Pro E services,
path generation and programming,
tooling testing, rapid prototyping,
and PLC/microcontroller
programming and system design.
The Center’s basic research
activities will address flexible
automation, advanced sensing,
advanced metal control, process
monitoring, and high-speed
machining. Its applied research
activities will include tool life
studies, tool selection, flexible
fixturing, custom machine design,
and controller design.
The Center for Advanced Metals
Processing will be supported
through company memberships,
contract research, and federal and
state funding.
