Don’t Get Me Started
Here we go again
If you are not aware, the playoff
season is around us. The NHL, NBA,
and scores of other leagues are in the
early stages of their playoff schedule.
And as always the playoffs produce
controversy and heartbreak. But if you
are a Buffalo Sabres fan, each play
off run produces both.
For those of you not familiar with
hockey and the plight of the Sabres,
let me enlighten you. In the past, the
Sabres were always on the outside
looking in during the playoffs. Al
though they had some talented squads
during those years, the Sabres never
made too much noise in the playoffs.
But with a new facility and a new
owner, the hopes were to capture Lord
Stanley’s cup and build a NHL dy
nasty in Buffalo. Although these
hopes have not been fulfilled as of yet,
the Sabres had a realistic shot at

The team didn’t have the firepower
of Detroit or a true superstar amongst
their ranks, but the Sabres somehow
managed to make it into the Stanley
Cup finals last season.
With the world’s best goalie,

series to a sixth game, the Sabres
faced a must win at the Marine Mid
land (now HSBC) arena. With the
score tied the game moved into over
time, and it looked like the Finals
would move to a game seven.
Then it happened. Somehow Dal
las Stars forward Brett Hull managed
to get the puck, and he Hung it past
Sabres goaltender Hasek. Before the
fans had time to stop gasping for air,
the Stanley Cup was brought onto the
ice and the Dallas celebration began.
The question that still looms is,
should Hull’s goal been allowed?
Video replay clearly showed that Bret
Hull’s skate was in the goal crease, a
violation of the rules that should re
sult in the waiving off of the goal. But
replay never was used and the goal
stood, as the Sabres felt the opportu
nity to claim Lord Stanley’s cup slip

After a disappointing regular sea
son and a backdoor entrance into the
playoffs, the Sabres hoped to forget
the heist of last season’s Stanley Cup.
But the crimes against the Sabres
continue. During game two of this
year’s rendition of the Stanley Cup fi
nals, the Sabres were slapped with
another refereeing miscue that cost
them the game.
In contrast to Hull’s goal last year,
which actually went into the net, the
goal scored by the Flyers’ John
LeClair during game two went
through the side of the net. LeClai r 's
goal should have been called off be
cause it never went in the goal. A key
component of scoring a goal is to ac
tually get the puck in the front of the
net. Apparently in the eyes of the
NHL and its crack staff of referees,

that key component isn’t as important
as it formerly was.
Video review conclusively showed
that the puck went through the side
of the net, but due to a missing cam
era angle the video judges could not
rule that the goal be waived off.
The NHL could not rule on the goal
because it did not have access to the
ESPN camera that is located inside the
net. This miscue cost the Sabres the
game and resulted in another scandal
for the NHL.
Now 1 realize that if the Sabres
could actually score some goals once
in a while, these issues would not be
discussed. But that isn’t the point. The
point is that the NHL continually
botches decisions when they
shouldn’t. In addition to that, the NHL
passes down inconsistent judgements
on player penalties which demon-

It’s time that the NHL clean house
and bring in a fresh group of admin
istrators who aren’t stained by the
scandals of the past. But that prob
ably won’t happen, even though it
would be a magnificent event.
On a side note, this will be my last
sports editorial of the year and prob
ably for some time. I have enjoyed
spouting off on various issues from
John Rocker to Peter Warick, and I
hope that the readers of this newspa
per have enjoyed reading my rants and
raves.
I would like to thank two Buffalo
sports personalities who inspired me
to write this column, Art Wander and
Chuck Dickerson. I hope that others
could tell it like they do.
