The Behrend Beacon OVER THE EDGE Housing and Food Service Athlete of the Week Jake Boyle Jake Boyle has been named this week’s Housing and Food service Ath lete of the Week. Last week Boyle was 12 for 31 (.387) with four home runs, two of which were grand slams, and 17 RBl’s. With his performance in the nine games, he is now the all-time leader in home runs and RBl’s at Penn State Behrend. He now has 18 career home runs and 92 career RBIs. Boyle eclipsed the marks held by former Behrend Lions stand out Joe Forenear (’79-82) who hit 15 and drove home 77. The Behrend Lions (19-15) were led all last week by the sophomore stand out. On two occasions Boyle hit grand slams propelling the team to victory. Against D’Youville, he was 3-3 with three runs scored and Five RBIs. In the win over La Roche, Boyle was 2 for 6 with six RBIs. Baseball team enters AMCC tourney as fourth seed by Matt Wiertel sports editor The Penn State Behrend baseball team is movn forward in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Coi ference (AMCC) Tournament this weekend. The L ons enter the tournament as the fourth seed, with a 6 conference record. The men currently are 19-15 overall, and they ju: completed a grueling stretch of games. Unfortunate' the team did not play as well as they would have liki to. The shutout was due in large part to Mandy Bodnor’s excellent pitch ing. Bodnor sat down nine Lake Erie batters and managed only one walk. Bodnor continued advancing the Behrend cause by going 3 for 3 at the plate, bringing four of her teammates home. Her batting average is now .494 and she has blasted four round trippers this season. In addition, she has 29 RBl’s and 45 hits in 91 at bats. With her performance this year, Bodnor has set a new career mark for RBIs at Behrend with 104 and holds the career mark for home runs with 18. Excellent execution allowed the Li ons to obliterated the hapless Lake Erie squad in the opening round of the AMCC playoffs. By averaging an incredible .625 from the plate, Behrend was able to compile 15 hits, two doubles, and one triple. While at the plate four times, Lesley Miller swung away with three hits getting six runs batted in, increas ing her average to .420. Stacy Blass had an amazing four stolen bases out of four attempts. The winners of round two will compete for the championship at 3:00 pm. :ain Collegiate Track team sets several records in Rochester Behrend’s track and field teams traveled to the University of Roches ter to compete in the Rochester Invi tational. The weather was much nicer than their previous meet, and Behrend took advantage of it. The men’s team broke 7 school records while compet ing on a 70-degree sunny day. Keith Cerroni, Steve Omecinski, Tommie Stovall, Jay Davids, and Steve Duda each entered or bumped up their marks in the record books twice on April 15th, while Dave Ober, Greg Cooper, Shawn Furman, Clint Altman, Nick Peth, and Carl Alberico made their mark once. The 4 x IOOm-relay team, consist ing of Cerroni, Ober, Omecinski, and Stovall, ran their race in 44.12 to take a 4th place and set a new record. Omecinski, Cooper, Stovall, and Furman all ran in the 4 x 400 m-relay, placing 3rd with a time of 3:23.93 and setting a record again. The 4 x 800 m-relay was the last race to set a record for the men with a time of 8:53.85. Their team con sisted of Davids, Altman, Cerroni, and Alberico. Davids’ second record breaking event was the high jump where he topped his old record with a jump of 6’4. 5". The jump was good enough to place him Ist. “Jay was real close to 6' 6”...and in perhaps the surprise of the day, Jay came back and ran a sub 2:04 split in his first 800 m ever on the 4 x 800 relay,” said head coach Rich Hoffman. Duda hurled himself into the records once again with throws of 42’3. 25" and 131’3" in the shot put and the discus. Men’s tennis heading to conference tournament Behrend’s mens tennis team wrapped up their season this year at Thiel with a 3 p.m. match on April 20th. As of the AMCC weekly sports update issued on April 17, 2000, Behrend’s team was in third place in the AMCC with a 1-4 AMCC record and a 6-9 record overall behind first place Penn State Altoona and second place Frostburg. Behrend will be heading to the AMCC Tournament which will be held on April 22nd. The AMCC tournament will be the last games for Seniors Todd Beddick, John Bloom, and Dustin Broussard. Behrend cross country members earn Academic All-America honors Members of the Penn State Behrend cross country teams recently were honored for their performance in the classroom. The Penn State Behrend women’s cross country team was named to Academic All-America by the NCAA Division 111 Cross Country Coaches Association. Coach Rich Hoffman’s women’s team earned a team grade point aver age of 3.21. Members of the team also earned individual All-America honors for their achievements. Three members of the women’s team were able to excel in class in addition to putting forth outstanding performances on the field. Junior Tina Rubay, junior Krissy DiMarzo, and freshman Jen Smialek, all earned individual honors. This throw would be the last record to be set by the men’s team that day. Although he didn’t break a record, Tim Linden put forth a good effort in the triple jump leaping 40-ft even. Even though they did not set as many records, the women’s team was extremely competitive. With several players nursing various injuries, the team placed well in several events. Pilly Gonzalez paced Behrend with 4 top ten finishes in all of her events. Gonzalez finished 3rd in the high jump with a jump of 5' 1.75" which is only .25" shy of the existing record. She also competed in the 100 m dash, long jump, and the shot put, showing she is an extremely versatile athlete. Lynn Herrmann was the top thrower for the women. Herrmann threw the javelin 91’ 6" and tallied a fourth place for her efforts. Tina Rubay may have her name in the record books for her performance in the 10,000 m run. At this point, Coach Hoffman is await ing the official time. After the meet, Coach Hoffman commented on the team’s perfor mance. Hoffman praised several ver satile runners. “Dennis Halaszynksi ran tough in the double, running both the steeplechase and the 5K,” Coach Hoffman said. For the women distance runners Hoffman said, “Betsy Voigt just keeps getting better and better and is run ning super. Jessie Coe ran a good race in the 3K and looks to be getting back into form.” The Behrend hurlers will travel to the Slippery Rock Invitational this weekend. At the meet, the squad hopes to improve on their current times and possibly set some new school records. The rest of the team is made up of Junior Matt Sudak; Sophmores Adam Antonis, Kenny Mitchell, Doug Tommasone, and Bill Weisberg; and Freshman James Sheen. In the tennis teams most recent matches Behrend lost to Baldwin- Wallace 0-9 on April 10th, lost to Frostburg twice 1-8 and 2-7 on April 15th, lost to Penn State Altoona 1-8 on April 16th, and won against Lake Erie 8-1 on April 18th. The men’s tennis team is coached by Jeff Barger. Barger has coached the men’s team for the past two sea son. He is a 1984 graduate of Fredonia State. On the men’s squad, junior Mark Suroviec and senior Eric Volbrecht, both achieved Academic All-America recognition. In order to be recognized by Aca demic All-America, the cross country members needed to achieve a GPA of 3.50 or above for the fall semester. In addition, all recipients needed to par ticipate in a regional cross country meet. PAGE 12
