—— Sports Don’t Get Me Started The sounds Summer is right around the corner, and the signs of its arrival are ever present. Once again, the summer sports scene in Erie is filled with excitement and could not arrive soon enough. On the diamond, the Erie Seawolves will be entering their second year in double A. Unlike the predecessors before them, the ‘Wolves participate in a lull season of baseball. Most Erieites have become accustomed to the short seasons that the Erie Sailors and other recent franchises entertained. Games didn’t start until the middle of May and the season usually ended in early September. Obviously these seasons did not produce as many games, but they were always well attended. This year marks the inaugural season for the Erie Invaders indoor football team. Not since the defunct Erie Wave and the World Basketball League, has baseball been challenged locally. The Invaders aren’t the Erie Wave, though, and they have a much stronger organization backing them. Hopefully fans will throw their support behind the team and propel them to success. Fan support is crucial to the team’s lifespan here in Erie. If only local football fans went to watch the games, the Invaders will have no problem filling the Tullio Arena. The indoor brand of football is quite different from the football that can be seen during the fall. The Invaders are stocked with former area football standouts and several have arena league experience. Arena football is something that I have been advocating for years. After waching it on ESPN, I thought that arena football would be a nice addition to the Erie sports scene. My opinion is meaningless on this matter though. Without the overwhelming support of the public at large, arena football in this area is destined for failure. Something that never fails in this area during the summer is the patronage of local golf courses. Just try and get a tee time at Downing Golf Course during the summer, and I think that impossibility will illustrate my point. Even though the area contains several good golf facilities, it still lacks an affordable professional caliber public facility. With several courses in development or in the process of being built, this problem could be rectified within the next few years. Although it is tough to get a tee time at most courses during the summer, golfers are pleased to find that greens fees in this area are affordable. \ r The Beacon would like to applaud all who voted in the SGA elections. Being an avid golf enthusiast, I know the trials and tribulations local golfers have to go through every summer. Getting tee times anywhere during the weekend is nearly impossible, unless you want to play on a cow pasture, and the Erie climate does not help your game either. It seems that as soon as you begin to play well, the season is coming to a close and the snow begins to fly. No matter what your sports preferences are, there is definitely something for you to do this summer. Whether it is on the links, or on the diamond, there are enough sporting events to go around.
