Unity Day to
start at Behrend

Next Wednesday, April 5, Penn
State Erie, The Behrend College, will
be hosting its first annual Unity Day.
Unity Day is a University-wide
celebration, one that Behrend has not
participated in, until now. The
premise of the celebration is to
condone the idea of ‘‘one community,
one campus, one Penn State,"
according to one of the event's key
Behrend organizers, Baena Cabiri.
The slogan for the day, "Unity +
Diversity = University" is meant to
reflect that goal.
“Even if someone interacts with
just one person that they’ve never
interacted with before for just one day,
we will have succeeded," explained
Unity Day has no official sponsors
or head organizations. Rather, it will
be a collaboration of many people and
organizations. In addition to Cabiri,
Fever continued
at the request of the community.
Despite extensive precautions,
problems arc not being anticipated.
Dean of Student Affairs Ken Miller is
quick to put the focus on the event, not
the alcohol. Also, according to
committee member Lesa Werkmeister.
Cider Rock, the fall equivalent of
Spring Fever, was successful and had
no serious alcohol problems.
Police And Safety
REPORT:
3/23/00 07:45 Residence Life advised Police and Safety of an unwanted guest in
Tigress.
3/23/00 16:00 A motorist came to Police and Safety and reported that her car was
struck while parked in B lot on March 21.
3/24/00 13:50 A faculty/staff member reported damage done to his vehicle while
parked on campus.
3/25/00 19:15 A student called Police and Safety and reported a conflict with his
roommate. Attempts to contact the other party failed. An officer in
formed a duty coordinator via voice mail about the situation; student
was also advised.
3/26/00 08:15 An anonymous caller reported vandalism to third floor Ohio Hall.

Ross have been instrumental in
planning the event, as has Janique
Caffie, director of educational equity
programs. Other organizations that
have contributed to the event include
SGA, JRC, MCC, the Athletics
Department, Intramurals, Bruno’s,
and LEB.
The main event that will occur on
Unity Day is a student versus faculty
and staff basketball game. The game
will be held at 7 p.m. in Erie Hall.
All students are invited to come and
cheer on their favorite professor.
Similar to varsity basketball games,
the cheerleaders will be cheering, the
dance team will be dancing, and the
pep band will be .. . pepping.
During the game, organizations
have been invited to set up booths
for their own fundraising events.
Thus far the Commuter Council has
been lined up to promote and accept
donations for Wish A Thon, and the
National Society of Black Engineers

According to Linda Lombardi,
acting associate dean of student
affairs, the event planners feel that
they have covered the basics and have
prepared well in the case that anything
should happen. “It looks as though it
will be a successful event that will
bring the Behrend Community
together to celebrate spring, Lombardi
commented.
(NSBE) will be selling candy. Any
organization wishing to set up a booth
should have a registration form filled
out and returned by Friday, March 31.

Rosters, student and faculty, will be
available by early afternoon on Friday,
March 31. Cabiri commented on the
expected participation among the
faculty and staff, stating that he
expected a good turnout. “A lot of the
faculty and staff members have been
talking trash about each other. It should
be an interesting game.”
Also on Unity Day, the campus will
be decorated with hundreds of purple
balloons, featuring the Unity Day
slogan. Plaid ribbons will also be
available for students to wear.

Likewise, Miller is happy with the
student response to planning this year’s
event. He emphasized, “the end product
has been greater student involvement
and responsibility.”
According to Kris Motta, assistant
director of student activities, “Spring
Fever is and will be a great event, as it
is one of the few remaining student
traditions on campus.”

“We put out a whole fake edition of our college’s
newspaper - everyone had fake names and we had
all sorts of fake questions. It was a lot of fun and
the faculty even liked it.”

both didn’t lik,e that she (my best friend) was bad
mouthing me. I did a lot of that stuff that year.”
