REND BEACON PAGE „.,,.............„„, 24 2000 I EATURES Websit .- ...6" . f1he: . ..We•th by Christine Piccola staff writer With all of the webpages out there, how do you find what you're looking for? You could use a search engine, like Yahoo! or Altavista, but they only cover about 20% (at best) of the sites available. And you can never tell if the site that the search engine returns is going to be useful. When you need practical, specific information, and the IVletrisearclies and Amazons don't help, try some of these sites. With www.capweb.net. govern . mem is just a few clicks away. This site offers access to volumes of government information, such as votes and laws. You can also get information about your elected representative, their address, and links to their webpages. The site also offers a link to the Jefferson Project (a guide to online politics), which then offers links to the U.S. government. "We may not do something every weekend, but we try to do things that people are interested in," said Captain Gillespie. The members choose many of the events the Raiders Club is involved with. So far the club has been to Peek n-Peak for skiing and to the Ricevi Ile Paint Park fora few paint ball matches. Anyone who has never been involved in a paint ball experience may not know that it, "hurts like the dickens, but it is still a good time, maybe too fun," said Captain Gillespie. Upcoming events include a Skeet Trap Shoot on April 1 in Wellsville, Pa., and for those more daring, a skydiving outing on April 8 in l-larborcreek in conjunction with the Erie Skydivers. The cost for the Skeet Shoot is $2O, which covers everything. Skydiving, on the other hand, is a little bit more pricey at $l4O, which covers the cost of the training and the first jump. If you decide this is a thrill you would like to try again, every jump thereafter will only cost you $4O. There will also be an Orienteering event on April 29 at Behrend. Orienteering is learning how to read and navigate with a map and compass and finding a point on the ground using these tools. The orienteering event is a competition: one must be quick and accurate. One is given a point and has to find that point on the ground in order to locate approximately 5 other points. Whoner locates the points the quickest is the winner. In addition to the scheduled events, the Raiders Club offers events for sinalltr interest groups, including the Ranger Challenge Team and the Color online. Sites like these offer much more than the traditional search engine. They narrow the focus of your search and come up with special ized sites containing just what you're looking for. Sometimes Y ahoo! just isn't enough. , No more Guard. The Ranger Challenge Team is a nine-person team that competes against teams from twenty other colleges and universities. Events in the competition include the two-mile run, push-ups, and sit-ups, along with rope bridge construction, orienteering, assembling/dissembling an I\4-16 rifle, a hand grenade assault course, a patrolling exam, and a six-mile rucksack race. The Color Guard requires much less effort and ambition. It is a five-member team that performs a service by presenting the "National Colors" at special University events. Events include graduation and convocation ceremonies. The team is made up of a color sergeant, two flag bearers, and two riflemen. Thus far there are about 55 members in the Raiders Club. There is only one requirement to become a member: one must contact Captain Gillespie and alert him of the interest. Members of the club are not required to be in the ROTC program. It is not mandatory for members to attend meetings or be involved in any certain number of activities. Members don't pay dues. It is a pay-as-you-go arrangement, and Captain Gillespie tries to find the best rates for the members. The Raiders Club website lets members know when there is a change in plans or if anything new has come up. The Raiders Club is also open to any faculty and staff interested in outdoor adventure training. Gaslight Lounge has the special recipe for the original burger The by Michael Nies staff writer Has your search for the best burger on the planet left you with an empty wallet and a bad taste in your mouth? Well then, it seems that you've over looked Erie's greatest little bar and lounge, the Gaslight Lounge. Of all the small local bars and big chain restaurants scattered about Erie where one can get a burger, this is by far my personal favorite. The atmo sphere is truly one of a kind, and the service has a warm and inviting feel ing that is unmatched by any other in the city, or on the planet for that mat ter. But what else would you expect from a restaurant that not only claims to have, but delivers the "best burgers on the planet?" The secret to a good burger is in the meat, and that's why the Gaslight's chef, Mary, starts with a half pound of ground Black Angus beef. The burgers are seasoned with Chef Mary's special blend of spices and then cooked to your desired tem perature. Now for the rest of the burger, you can either choose to have a traditional burger with lettuce, tomato, and mayo, or you can try one of the Gaslight's specialty burgers, like the Mushroom Swiss Burger, a Black Angus burger topped with sauteed mushrooms and smothered with Swiss cheese. Or how about trying the Lombo-Jack Angus Burger with sau teed onions and peppers and melted Jack cheese? Not in the mood for a burger? The Gaslight also offers other specialty items. This entree is cov ered with sauteed onions and smoth ered in an original cheese sauce stuffed into a fresh baked roll. The Gaslight's menu also features a variety of appetizers such as moz zarella cheese sticks and pizza logs; both are served with a tangy marinara sauce. Or, perhaps one of their six flavors of wings will better satisfy your appetite. Not a meat lover? How about try ing a hearty garden salad, piled high with mixed greens and fresh veg etables. There is also a 14-inch fresh baked pizza, dripping with melted cheese and topped with your choice of vegetables. The Gaslight also of fers a big, plump, juicy veggie burger that can be stacked up with the same toppings as their Angus burgers. Another great thing about all of this excellent Gaslight food is that not one sandwich on the menu is priced over $4.95! In addition to great food, the Gas light also boasts a full bar of wine, beer, and spirits, including my favor ite, Beck's Dark. Great food at excellent prices isn't all that the Gaslight has to offer. The atmosphere is relaxing and friendly. When you walk in through the front door, the bartender Dave calls you by name and greets you with a hand shake. Then out from the kitchen comes Chef Mary with arms open and ready to give you a big hug and ask you how you've been, if they know you, of course. The Lombardozzis are also the proprietors of the Gas light, and even if they don't know your name, I'm sure they'd like to know it and they'd rather you call them by their name. The Restaurant opens at 4 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, and closes whenever the number of employees outnumbers the customers Monday through Sat urday. The kitchen, where the creation of the masterpieces takes place, is open from 4 -10 p.m. on Mondays, Tues days, and Thursdays; 4 p.m. - mid night on Wednesdays and Fridays; and 6 p.m. - midnight on Saturdays. On Mondays from 8 p.m. until close, the Gaslight offers movie night. One of the finely trained bar tenders brings in a couple of movies and a bunch of friends to sit around drinking beer, watching movies, and examining some of the finer details of life, or shooting the bull. On Wednesday and Saturday, the Gas light hosts karaoke from 9 p.m. until close with "The Best Sound in Town," by Paul Amann. So whether you're looking for a few friendly faces and a beer, or a killer burger to fill your stomach, stop by the Gaslight Lounge and say hi to Dave and Mary, as they're sure to fill your stomach without emptying your wallet. army 60 Muscular spasm 61 Vanity 62 Axed 63 That woman 65 Sock end 66 Press coverage
