Hoodlums, Convicts, and Crackheads: the state of the NFL
A little over a week ago another
National Football League player
converted from superstar to convict.
Ray Lewis, all-star linebacker for the
Baltimore Ravens, became the latest
NFL athlete to put on the pinstripes.
Supposedly Lewis and several others
murdered two people on January 31.
Night long Super Bowl parties are
not supposed to end with two people
dead, Ray. Now I know they at least
taught you that at the University of
Miami.
Actually murder has become a
common event in the NFL ranks.
Besides OJ, who got off because the
glove didn't fit and who by the way
is still looking for the real killer,
other NFL superstars have been
guests at the Graybar Hotel.

So the question to be raised is
why? Why do these players who are
financially set for life and couldn't
possibly ask for any more material
goods commit such crimes?
In my opinion there isn't one
specific answer or solution to this
escalating problem. For starters we
as a society have to be careful when
we automatically depict athletes as
role models. Just because someone
can throw a football or can run real
fast doesn't make them a person that
children should idolize. Most of
these athletes can barely write a
complete sentence, let alone be a role
model for millions of people.
And that brings up another point.
Why are we allowing athletes to slide
through college simply because they
can fill arenas and the universities'

attending college is to get an responsibility for their actions. We
education, or edumacation ,as in the as a society should be treating

as gods who arc almighty. No more
praising repeat drug offenders. (i.e.
Bam Morris and Lawrence Taylor)
Players who abuse illegal
substances, abuse their spouses or
father dozens of illegitimate children
(i.e. Shawn Kemp) should be held
accountable by their respective
teams.
Now I know that teams can't nor
should monitor players' actions 24-
7, but they can suspend their multi
million dollar contracts if they break
the law. Something has to be done
to control these athletes. It's time that
they join the rest of us in reality.
