PAGE 14 THE BEHREND BEACON FEBRUARY 4 2000 SPORTS Commercials outdone by fantastic finish How disappointing that the days of the Budweiser frogs and their rival lizards are gone. How disappoint ing that this year's Super Bowl com mercials were a showcase of, www.i don't give a crap what's on these websites.com, internet sites. And how disappointing for those of you who actually cared. The football critics, all week, laughed every time they heard the names of the Titans and Rams asso ciated with the greatest sporting event of the year, Super Bowl XXXIV. And once again, we heard the overused line of, "oh, I hope the commercials are good," as if some know-it-all football "fan" thought they were cracking a joke no one ever heard before. And while they waited to he entertained by a bunch of lame computer corporate guys that think stupidity equals laughter, I found the Penn State Behrend Pin-Bradford Pitt-Greensburg La Roche Lake Erie Frostburg Penn State Altoona Behrend 84 Lake Erie 61 I3e hrend 36 48 84 Lake Erie 25 36 61 Behrend Player FG 3-point FT Points Henderson 0-0 0-0 0-0 0 Lawrence 6-10 2-4 0-0 14 McKinney 0-2 0-2 2-2 2 Berchtold 3-4 1- I 0-0 7 Dunn 0-0 0-0 0-0 0 Orris 0-2 0-1 0-0 0 Dubyak I -1 1-1 2-2 5 Wilson 6-9 0-0 2-2 14 Hughes 9-11 0-0 5-8 23 Keith 4-12 4-10 0-0 12 Park 3-6 0-1 1-2 7 totals 32-57 8-20 12-16 84 Assists: 20. All week leading up to the Super Bowl, I hoped that the game would give me something to blast those crit ics with. I hoped that the game be tween these two "undeserving" teams would give true football fans some thing to remember. So when the first half was highlighted by mistakes and field goals and even mistakes within the field goals, I knew that glorify- 8-0 17-2 5-1 11-6 5-2 12-6 3-4 4-11 2-5 3-16 1-6 5-14 1-6 2-14 I or up to date sports scores around the clock call the SPORTSLINE at: (814) 898-6163 and Press 1 Penn State Behrend Frostburg Penn State Aloona Pitt-Bradford La Roche Pitt-Greensburg Lake Erie Lake Erie 39 39 Behrend 52 Behrend 30 22 Lake Erie 13 26 Behrend Player FO 3-point Buck 2-10 2-8 Nestor 1-2 0-0 Weigold 0-4 0-3 Mauser 1-2 0-0 Tanner 0-1 0-0 Janiuk 0-1 0-1 Jackson 3-6 0-0 Costanzo 2-5 0-2 2-2 Phillips 3-4 0-0 11-12 17 Sanders 0-7 0-5 2-2 2 O'Lare 4-9 0-0 1-2 9 Totals 16-51 2-19 18-21 52 Assists: 12, Rebounds: 40, Blocks: 2, Steals: 11, TO: 13 Lake Erie 3-point 0-0 0-I 0-0 1-3 1-2 0-0 Player Davis FlaN,rilla McCurdy Swiatek Balkbach Cousins Naberezny Grill Pencak 1-2 0-0 1-I 2 - Totals 15-45 3-9 6-12 39 Assists: 6, Rebounds: 32, Blocks: 2, Steals: 8. A 16-0 deficit further hurt my cause, turning the game from a low scoring battle to a potential blowout. And it was then, when fans began to criticize the biggest spectacle in sports, that the Tennessee Titans de cided to explode. The methodical fourth quarter comeback not only put the game in a 16-16 tie with only min utes remaining, but began to give fans a sense that this could be one of those classic Super Bowl moments. The Rams took full advantage of the moment as Kurt Warner ended his dream season with a 74-yard strike to Isaac Bruce to take a seven-point lead. The play seemed so symbolic for the way the Rams had turned their franchise around. The entire concept of this year's Rams team was that they went from nobodies to Super Bowl ,et Air ....111.111111.1% !..teL 115-5 8-0 15-5 5-2 10-7 5-3 8-10 3-3 7-10 3-4 7-10 1-6 5-12 0-7 5-12 Points 6 1 0 1 1 1 I-4 0 0 0-0 Points i K U Points 0 19 11 4 3 Champs in the blink of an eye. And in the blink of an eye, they would end the Titans' hopes with a play they ran more often than Mark McGwire hits homeruns. With that pass, Warner went from being remembered as a supermarket stock boy to a Super Bowl hero, throwing for nearly 100 more yards than any quarterback ever has in Su per Bowl history. That includes names such as Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Troy Aikman and even Joe Montana. But the best of Super Bowl XXXIV had yet to come. It wasn't Warner's heroic end to a dream sea son or the Titans' final march down the field that wili be played in high light reels for years to come. It was the final play. The perfect pass from Steve McNair to Kevin Dyson and the stretch to the endzone. The Ti- Behrend 68 Penn State Altoona 48 Behrend 28 40 68 P. S.
