Behrend women
into AMCC lead
by Matt Wiertel
sports editor
The Penn State Behrend women's
basketball team moved into first
place in the Allegheny Mountain
Collegiate Conference by defeating
conference rival Frostburg 77-75 on
Wednesday. With the win the Lions
upheld their undefeated status in the
AMCC and improved their overall
season record to 11-5.
The women are on a tear as of
late, winning their last four games.
On Saturday, the Lions lit up Wash
ington and Jefferson, scoring 65
points en route to a 65-45 victory.
Jen O'Lare extended her streak of
great performances by scoring 17
points and going 4-4 from the foul
line. Tiffany Buck and Erin Phillips
also had solid performances. Each
tallied 12 points and were a com
bined 7-9 from the field.
Although Washington and
Jefferson outrebounded the Lions
38-29, Behrend made up for that
deficit by stealing the ball 13 times
and limiting turnovers to 18.
On Wednesday, the team faced off
against AMCC rival Frostburg at
Erie Hall. Sticking with the Hawai
ian theme, Frostburg kept the heat
on Behrend the entire game. Lead
ing by 5 going into the half, the Li
ons fended off a second half charge
by the Bobcats and won 77-75.
The Lions had a tough time con
taining Frostburg's Kim Faust, who
was the leading scorer from either
team with 27 points. The Bobcats
kept the game close by shooting an
impressive 74% from the free throw
line overall and 100% from the
stripe in the second half.
Four Lions finished the game in
double digits and the point produc
tion was evenly distributed amongst
the entire team. Erin Phillips and

by Jason Snyder
editor-in-chief
The Behrend men's basketball
team lived up to the theme of Hawaii
Night in Erie Hall on Wednesday
night, burning up Frostburg 64-55 in
conference play. The Lions moved
to 4-0 in the Allegheny Mountain
Collegiate Conference (AMCC), and
13-2 overall with the win.
The Behrend men opened the
game with an 18-4 spurt and held the
lead for the rest of the first half
behind 6/10 shooting from three
point land. The men also were hot
from inside the arc, shooting 59%.
Chris Hughes sparked the Lions
early with strong inside play, while
Matt Keith and Andy Berchtold
provided an outside touch.
Behrend entered the half with a
40-17 lead, matching their largest
lead of the night.
Frostburg slowly chipped away at

timeout, Behrend regrouped and
held on for the nine-point win.
Hughes and Andy Lawrence were
the game's high scorers with 17
points apiece. Hughes also grabbed
11 rebounds and dished out four
assists
The Lions held Frostburg to just
44% from the field and 33% from
behind the arc. The win was
Behrend's fourth straight overall.
In action earlier in the week, the
Lions avenged their previous one
point loss to Thiel, with a 55-50 win
on Saturday. Hughes led Behrend
with 17 points and 9 rebounds.
The Behrend men will continue in
their conference schedule, playing
their next five games against AMCC
competitors. The Lions will travel
to Pitt-Greensburg on January 22 and
will play host to Lake Erie on
January 26. After the five games of
conference play, Behrend will have
a good sense as to whether or not
they will host the AMCC
Championships in February.
