Don't Get Me Started
Now that it is January, and we
aren't subject to the wrath of God
just yet, it's time to once again
analyze this year's occurrences in
the National Football League. The
1999 season has been without a
doubt the wackiest NFL season in
recent history. A single season never
has seen the collapse of so many
dynasties or the emergence of so
many former perennial losers. In
short, this past season and the
playoffs thus far have been
unpredictable.
For years teams like the Green
Bay Packers, Dallas Cowbo s and

quarterback Steve Young fall to injury
early in the season. The Packers were
another riches to rags story this season.
A team that won the Super Bowl three
years ago failed to make the playoffs
after compiling a disappointing 8-8
record. Fittingly, Packers' general
manager Ron Wolfe fired the entire
coaching staff after only one year on the
job. I guess Vince Lombardi was right
when he said. 'winning isn't everything,
it's the only thing." For the record I can't
stand the Cowboys: therefore I am not
going to explain to you why they are
god-awful, if they only would stay out
of jail maybe they'd have a snowball's

The same type of team
disappointments can be found in the
AFC as well. The two time defending
Super Bowl champion Denver
Broncos didn't have a chance to make
it to the Sani-Flush Toilet Bowl let
alone a third consecutive Super Bowl,
after a dismal 6-10 season. Other
perennial playoff contenders like the
Pittsburgh Steelers are forced to watch
the Decade of Champions video
collection that highlights the years
when the team wasn't quarterbacked
by some overpaid hack.

many surprises. Teams like the St.
Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers ,
and Indianapolis Colts, who were
formerly the doormats of the NFL,
refuse to be stepped on anymore.
Instead they are running over the
competition. Each team recorded at
least eleven wins en route to winning
their respective divisions. The Colts
made a miraculous turnaround, behind
second year quarterback Peyton
Manning, finishing the regular season
13-3 after going 3-13 last season. The
Rams have made a turnaround behind
former Arena football quarterback and

past season, which has only previously
been done by Dan Marino.
But the miracles have carried over into
the playoffs already. Last weekend in the
AFC wildcard game the Tennessee Titans
shocked the Buffalo Bills by pulling off
a trick kick return. The Bills had scored
what should have been the winning field
goal, but due to the lack of coaching and
execution on behalf of the Bills, the Titans
returned the kickoff for a touchdown.
In my estimation, the remaining games
in the playoffs will he more unpredictable
than the games that already have been
played. Just take a look at the way the
season has played out so far, and that is
am le evidence to su • sort m claim.
