`Feed the Need' to culminate at
Dinner for Six Strangers
by Raechel Kiska
staff writer
With the holidays quickly ap
proaching, many students are looking
forward to the break from classes and
spending some quality time with their
families. However, many students are
unable to travel home for the short
Thanksgiving break and that is why
Behrend hosts the Thanksgiving Din
ner for Six Strangers.
Chris Rizzo, Director of Student
Activities, explained that the concept
of this dinner began years ago, actu
ally before the construction of 1-79.
Before the road was built, even stu
dents from Pittsburgh couldn't return
home for the short four-day break. So,
in lieu of a traditional family dinner,
faculty and staff members would host
students in their homes for Thanks
giving.
Around 1989, the student body at
Behrend became so large that it was
impossible for the participating fac
ulty and staff members to accommo-
date so many students, so it was in
corporated as a campus program. The
program was built around the under

day spirit and to meet new people in
the process.
Approximately 200 students and
faculty members participate in the
yearly activity. The dinner tables con
sist of five students and one faculty
or staff member. Rizzo explained that
the tables are assigned in hopes that
you do not know any of the other
guests because the dinner is really
supposed to give everyone an oppor
tunity to open up, converse and get
to know those that you really didn't
know all that well before.
"I think it really is one of the rich
est Behrend traditions. The value re
flected is that of Penn State Behrend;
we're a community that knows one
another and values the importance of
faculty, staff and student involve
ment," Rizzo commented.
This year's dinner is planned for
Nov. 16 in the Reed Union Building
Commons. A reception is scheduled
for 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6
p.m. Dinner is free of charge, so
RSVP to the Office of Student Ac
tivities by Nov. 12, and don't forget
to bring a food donation for the "Feed
the Need" food drive benefiting the
Second Harvest Food Bank.
DO YOU FEEL SAFE ON CAMPUS?
WHY OR WHY NOT?
