BEHREND PROFESSOR AD
DRESSES ECONOMIC ISSUES
IN SPORTS
Dr. John Hzel. a nationally rec
ognized expert in the economics of
sports, will open the Provost Speaker
Series at Behrend College, on Thurs
day, November 4, with Myths About
Sports: The Role of Economics. His
lecture, which is free and open to the
public, will begin at noon in the Reed
Union Building Lecture Hall.
Fizel, a professor of economics
at Penn State Behrend, is the co-edi
tor of Sports Economics: Current Re
search, published this year by Green
wood. He is also the co-editor of
Baseball Economics: Current Re
search, published in 1996. Although
he conducts research in applied
microeconomic topics such as nurs
ing home efficiency, oil market pric
ing. mutual fund performance, and ex
ecutive compensation. and he has had
numerous journal articles published
on these topics, he still finds the eco
nomics of sports an important focus.
Fizel said, "the wealth of data
available in sports makes the indus
try a laboratory in which we can ob
serve economic behavior and test
business theories." Economic analy
sis of sports marketing, employee pro
ductivity, compensation, labor rela
tions, and profitability often parallels
the analysis of business in general.
Fizel reports that it's also a pleasure
to match an avocation with hisvoca
tion. Baseball has an analytical rigor
that matches the study of economics.
Fizel is the winner of the 1999
Penn State Erie Council of Fellows
Award for Excellence in Research. He
received his doctorate from the Uni
versity of Michigan in 1981 and
taught at the University of Wiscon-

Better Pizza. reTl2"""
At the Commuter Council meeting on October 25, it was brought up that the Pizza with the
rovost meeting will be at Reed 113, not in the Reed Commons. The date for Pizza with the
rovost will be the same, on November 8 at noon. It was also discussed that we will need help
ith the Wish-a-Thon. A tentative date in April was set for the Wish-a-Thon, but the Commuter
ouncil needs help in setting up now. They need people to start with some publicity and calling
usinesses for support. If anyone is interested in helping out, you can email Meggan at

.y Commuter Council included a trip to Grove City and a ski trip to Peak `n Peek. The idea of
aking stress balls for the fundraiser was supported and many offered ideas on how to go about
aking them. Another idea brought up for the fundraiser was to use colorful, printed balloons or
ut the Nittany Lion on the side of the balloon.
The Commuter Corner is written weekly by a member of the Commuter Council. The Commuter Council
office is located , in the Reed Building, and meetings are held every Monday at 1 p.m. in Reed 112. To
contact the Commuter Council, call their office at 898-6452 or e-mail Karl Gressley at kfglo3@psu.edu
