OCTOBER 29 ''' I I It ki: . i .. SPORTS Out o Yankees represent baseball's glory years Derek Jeter summed it up best after the New York Yankees com pleted the sweep of the Atlanta Braves this past Wednesday. "It's a team that knows how to win." He was speaking for this year's World Series Championship team. But that statement speaks volumes for the New York Yankee organi zation, from the days of Ruth and Gehrig, through the years of DiMaggio and now the run of what should be called the greatest all around baseball team in history. The Yankees have always known how to win. Commissioner Bud Selig could finally call the New York Yankees the "team of the decade." The team of the decade!? What an in justice! The Yankees are the "team of the century." Twenty-five World Series Championships is unprecedented. That is why a team as consistent as the Yan kees can represent baseball. The pin stripes are forever. They always have represented greatness and they always will. Watching these Yankees celebrate again and listening to Bob Costas reminisce about the days of old Yan kee pride made it seem like it was baseball again. All those stories you hear of days and nights spent at the sandlot. All those legendary players you hear about. All the roles that the sport of baseball played in society. It all began to make sense to me. It is unfortunate that baseball seems to be dying. Those good old days just seem so traditional, that losing them would be a huge injustice for the kids of the next generation. No matter how close this series against the Braves should have been, or how dominant the Yankees proved to be, baseball ended this century with those "damn Yankees" on top once again. This conclusion to baseball this century has to be seen as a memo rable moment in baseball history. Because at the end of the next cen tury, we can only imagine where sports will be. what they've gone through and where they will be headed. But we do know that base ball was the sport of our century. It is America's Pastime. Maybe baseball isn't exactly what it used to be, but we can at least hear the stories and watch the tapes.
