SMITH FAMILY GIVES
CHAPEL, BELL TOWER
TO BEHREND
The Larry V. Smith family has
made a gift to build a multi-faith
chapel and bell tower that will con
tribute substantially to the spiritual
dimension of a Penn State Behrend
education. The $3 million project
will be funded by gifts for the bell
tower from the late Floyd "Smitty”
Smith and his wife, Juanita, and for
the chapel by Larry V. Smith, his
Kathryn, and their children.
Smith, owner of Automation De
vices, Inc. in Fairview, said that he
and his wife decided to build a

1999-2000 SUPPLEMENTAL STUDENT ACTIVITY FEE COMMITTEE
$45,000 TO BE DISTRIBUTED IN FALL 1999!!!
The Student Activity Fee Committee is preparing to allocate $45,000 in funds for the Fall 1999
Semester. We invite your proposal requests. Please pick up a Funding Proposal Request Form
at the Reed Union Building (RUB) Information Desk, the SGA Office, the Office of Student
Activities, or the Office of Student Affairs to suggest uses for the available funding. Funding
guidelines are summarized below. New this year: The SAF Committee will be meeting on
September 7 th , October s**, November 2 nd , and December 7* to review proposals. The
proposal submission deadline for 9/7 is 9/7 by 1 p.m.; deadline for 10/5 is 9/28 by 5 p.m.;
deadline for 11/2 is 10/26 by 5 p.m.; and deadline for 12/7 is 11/30 by 5 p.m.
Excluded from funding consideration arc salaries, nuyor building renovations, and constroctior
of new facilities. Student activity fee revenues cannot be used to replace activities currently
supported through general University funds. Student activity fee revenues may be used for the
following purposes.
CAMPUS ACTIVITIES which enhance out-of-class experiences for students.
EQUIPMENT which facilitates opportunities for student involvement and campus-wide
programming.
FACILITIES UPGRADES in direct support of out-of-class experiences.
PROGRAM SUPPORT to meet campus-wide programming needs, such as lecture series,
music programs, cultural events, and entertainment.
RECREATION, including support for club sports, intramurals, open recreation, and
facilities and equipment which support these needs.
DIVERSE POPULATIONS AND ISSUES, including programs and activities which support
and/or enhance such diversity and non-traditional activities.

problems. "We experienced tremen
dous support from family and friends
at that time and made the commitment
to fund the chapel in the future,” he
said. "We’re happy we could honor
our commitment."
A statement developed by faculty,
staff, and students calls for the
chapel’s design to "inspire reverence,
awe, contemplation, and peace."
Early plans envision the chapel with
not only a flexible worship space but
also rooms for receptions, small gath
erings, and meetings. The bell and
clock tower will feature a full caril
lon of bells that will toll the hour and
play both sacred and secular music.
On July 13 Penn State's Board of
Trustees approved Noelker and Hull
Associates, Inc. as the architectural
firm that will oversee the project. The

PENN STATE ALUMNI
PLAN FOOTBALL TRIP
The Erie County chapter of the
Penn State Alumni Association will
travel by bus to University Park on
Saturday, Sept. 4, for the Penn State-
Akron football game. The group has
organized an annual football trip since
1972 and invites all Penn State alumni
and friends to join them for the event.
The bus will leave at 6 a.m. from
the Burlington Coat Factory parking
lot at the Millereek Mall and return at
approximately 10 p.m. The cost ot
the trip, which is $77 for members of
the chapter and $B7 for non-members,
includes game ticket, bus trip, a sack
lunch, and refreshments on the bus.
