The Behrend Beacon 1999 Fall Sports Preview Lions outlook positive; despite early loss to Fredonia State The men's soccer team talks strategy in preparation for this weekend's Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament by Matt Wiertd sports editor The Behrend Lions men's soccer team is looking to build on their past success. Coming off a LT9 record from last year and an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title in 1997. the Lions are prepared lox another productive season. The men and w omen come off a second place finish in last year's championships behind Trostburg State under the direction of then first year head coach Rich Hoffman. This season. Holfman returns as head coach and will be assisted by Ray Shrout. Shrout comes to Behrend from Slippery Rock. The women have two returning run ners this season including Tina Rubay and Keri Low ntan. This year's roster also consists of senior Kristine DiMar/o and several freshmen. Both Lions' teams will open their respective seasons at Buffalo State on September 4 followed by the Penn State Behrend Invitational on Septem ber 18. The Lions will also compete in the Alfred, Frostburg, Dickinson, Pitt-Bradford, and Gettysburg Invitationals before racing for AMCC supremacy at the championships on October 30. Leo Hanley, Dan Falk. Dave Snook, and All-AMCC performer James Martin. September 3,1999 The Lions opened the season against nationally ranked Fredonia Slate on Wednesday. But they were dealt a difficult 1-0 loss after going into sudden death double overtime. They continue their early season play in the annual Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against Misericordia and Sunday at 1:()() p.m. against Hiram. Septem ber 3rd and September 4th with the Cortland State Tournament. The Li ons feel they have a lot to prove this season after a tough Fall last year. The drawing will be held at every fall home athletic contest (men and women’s soccer, volleyball, tennis, and cross country). The cash pot will never go under $25. Even though your name has already been entered into the drawing you can increase your chances of winning at each athletic event. During the first half of every home game, students will be able to enter their name in the drawing again by signing up at the Random Cash Drawing station located by the PEPSI BIN. The drawing station will only take entries before halftime. The actual Cash Drawing will take place during the second half. The time of the drawing is not set, it will vary. You must be PRESENT to win the cash. If the winner is not present at the time of the drawing the cash will roll over into the next athletic contest with an additional $5 added into the drawing. Under head coach Dan Perritano the program has compiled an impressive record of 50- 18-6 over the last four seasons. “We have a very competitive crew,” said coach Perritano. “This is a hard work ing group. They have a positive out look on the season." Returning players to watch out for include senior Jill Yamma, junior Katie Giles, and Laura Furko. Each earned All-AMCC honors with Furko being named co-MVP of the confer ence in 1998. Also returning is the ‘9B co-Newcomer of the Year in the AMCC recipient Michelle Malatesta. Adding strength to this year's squad are returning players Lauren Arrtgo, Jill Barbisch, Bethany Cummings, Kristin Gansberger, Diane Holtsford, Terry Lampman, Amy Laßoeca, Kelly Maze, and Shannon Wroblewski. The overall experience and talent of the upperclassmen will increase the possibility of the Behrend Lions three-peating. ‘9B season successful '99 season." Senior Tanya Deals and junior Mary Good return from last year to lead this young team. Sophomores returning are Allison Millet, Jessica Long, Sarah Peterson, Brianne Englebert and juniors Sarah Fry and Jamila Ortman. The fresh men are headed by Karen Walters, who is expected to take over the setter's position this season. Other freshmen joining the team are Vanessa Kruse, Stephanie Phillips, Karrie Crooks and Rose Boni. Coach Perritano and (lie Behrend Lions are eager to build on past suc cesses and improve on last year's record of 15-3-3. The team antici pates competing for the AMCC title considering they hav e not lost a con ference match in two years. On tap for this years’ schedule are four con ference matches and the AMCC at the end of the season. This weekend the Behrend Lions host Hiram. RIT, and Wilkes lor the Lauffer Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Lions will play Hiram on Friday at 2:00 p.m. while Wilkes and RIT battle at 4:00 p.m. The consolation game is set for Sunday at I 1:00 a.m. and the cham pionship game is at 1 :00 p.m. * 'S PAGE 10
