Controversial Stadium Expansion at University Park by Elizabeth Guelcher assistant editor ; In March, Penn State President Gra l ham Spanier spent some time in the ■ capital petitioning the Pennsylvania ; House and Senate Appropriations ! Committees for funding. Every year, t the state government allocates money ! to colleges throughout Pennsylvania i for things like updating technology and J improving the standard of living on 1 campus. This year, however, included ; in Spanier’s requests was a proposi- I tion for $l5 million separate from the j money allocated for use within the uni ; versity. The proposed $l5 million I would instead fund, in part, the $B5 ■ million expansion of Beaver stadium at University Park. However, some stu dents think the money could be better spent. In May of 1998. the Penn State Board of Trustees approved the Bea ver Stadium expansion to include 10,000 more seats as well as the addi tion of skvboxes. UP Athletic Dircc in regards to student participation. I am a little unsatisfied with the small amount of student candidates who were willing to run for SGA, student participation in this area just disap peared. I would also like to see a more efficiently run student govern ment, not that Buck did not achieve this, hut I think with the resources we have and the incoming Senate I can find better ways to serve the stu dents." tor. Tim Curley said that no tuition money would be used in order to carry out the project. In keeping with that, university officials are looking to the State for help. The expansion, according to Spanier, falls under the umbrella of community service projects, which are intended to boost local economies. The State will dis burse $650 million for community service projects this year, half of which will be used to build new ma jor league football and baseball sta diums. Critics say the money could be bet ter used at UP, and that the project could be funded through the purchase of skybox tickets since the demand for tickets is so high at this point. But Spanier hopes the project will bring about a growth spurt for Center County. Crowding 100,000 people in there for a football game is half the fun. I defi nitely think the money could be bet ter used for other purposes.” Mark Schoneveld, a History ma jor at UP and columnist for The Col legian wrote an editorial in the March 17 issue condemning Spanier’s re quest. He said, “adding 10,000 seats to Beaver stadium is borderline chau vinism and self- glorification. While we’re at it, why don’t we pave the entire grass fields around Beaver Sta dium so that tailgaters won’t have to deal with mud.” It seems that although Spanier has tried to shed the project in a favor able light, most students are opposed to the idea. With the rapid growth of Penn State becoming a concern for more and more students, university officials will have to work carefully to change minds about the stadium expansion.
