final stretch
by Jason Snyder
sports editor
The Behrend men’s and women’s
track and field teams competed at
the Slippery Rock Open on April 17
under cold and rainy conditions.
This meet came off an
overwhelming week where the men
learned of their national ranking of
27.
Head coach Rich Hoffman
commented on the meet’s
conditions, "this made the
performances hard to judge. We
backed off due to the conditions in
some cases, holding some people
out of some events where we were
concerned about injury.”
The women's team had some
season best performances in many
events. Keri Lowman ran the 5000
meter in 22:26.0 to place seventh
followed by Una Rubay, knocking
24 seconds off her personal best
with a time of 22:56.0, good for
eighth.
this Sunday
Also running well in the distance
events was Kathryn Tate in the 1500
meter run. Tate crossed the line in
5:47, 18 seconds faster than her
previous best. Jenny Detelich
slowed up a bit due to the
conditions, but still placed third in
the 1500 and 800 meter runs.
Hoffman said, "she ran against
some tough competition and
competed hard. That’s important as
she progresses up the performance
ladder to not be intimidated by the
other athletes.”
Lynn Herrmann, again, threw
well in the javelin. She launched
the juv 106’8" for a second place
The men's team was highlighted
by their 4 x 400 meter relay team of
Shawn Furman, Tommie Stovall,
Chris Schlosser and Steve
Omecinski who placed third.
Steve Duda placed fourth in the
javelin with a toss of 161’1” and
Mark Suroviec ran the 1500 meter
run in 4:16, good for third place.
"1 am hoping we can get rested
and be healed and be ready to go as
we taper off,” said Hoffman. Next
up for the Lions will be a meet at
Baldwin-Wallace College on April
24. Hoffman sees the meet as, “a
great test of where we are at as it
typically attracts some fantastic Dill
and above talent.”
