Never Been Kissed ? Forget about it, please!

I recently went to see the movie
Never Been Kissed, starring Drew
Barrymore. You may be asking, do I
recommend it? Well the answer is
NO! Do not under any circumstances
go see this movie. Unless of course
you have an extra seven dollars in
your pocket that you absolutely need
to spend. And if that is the case, just
give ME the seven dollars and stay
home and watch old Miami Vice
reruns on FX.
In the movie Drew plays Josie, a
25 year old reporter for the Chicago
Sun Times, whose first reporting job
is to go undercover as a student in a
local high school and find a hot story
to report about. Now repeat after me,
PREDICTABLE. Whatever you may
be thinking about what will happen
in this movie probably does.
Josie was a geek in high school, a
big one. All the kids called her “Josie
Grossie.” She never grew out of the
geek frame of mind and has a very
hard time shedding that persona. Of
course the kids aren’t going to accept
her. So the entire first half of the
The Matchbox Players is proud to present 8.R.U.N.0.5., an original musical revue about college
life at Behrend. 8.R.U.N.0.5. was created, written, and produced by members of Matchbox
Players, Behrend’s Theatre club. Starring in the presentation are (front row) Leo Hanley,
Jessica Dows, (back row, left to right) Erin Costello, James Washburn, John Hoderny and
Stephanie Miller.
One Day on ' vl
movie is spent wasted on “geek”
jokes and 80s jokes. Boring.
Finally Josie’s brother Rob, played
by the funny David Arquette (of
Scream fame), comes up with the
theory that if at least one kid thinks
that she is cool, then the others will
follow. So HE goes back to high
school too, and since he was cool in
high school, he is quickly accepted.
Rob does the job of getting Josie
accepted and soon she is hanging
with the popular kids.
Along the way, Josie falls for her
English teacher and he falls for her,
thinking that she is wise beyond her
years (ah, if only he knew). The time
for her story to be turned in is rapidly
approaching, but Josie is too caught
up in being popular to care. Then
Josie is crowned prom Queen, and
well, lets just say that the story is
sinking fast!
After all the great movies Drew
has made lately, I really have to
wonder why she did this one. She
was great in Ever After and she was
fabulous in The Wedding Singer, so
what happened? Oh, did I forget to
mention that Drew also produced this
movie, it was the first time she has

ever produced ... well that explains a
lot. Easy plotline plus simple jokes
makes one easy production. Okay,
things are starting to make a little
more sense now.
There were only two good things
in this movie that kept me from
getting up and demanding my seven
dollars back. One was Molly
Shannon, who is best known as Mary
Katherine Gallagher, the Catholic
school girl on Saturday Night Live.
She played Josie’s best friend Anita.
She brought a great deal of humor to
this movie, most notably when
making references to Josie’s cute
teacher. The second thing that I liked
about this movie was the line, “It took
me along time to get here,” spoken
by Josie near the end of the movie. It
reminded me that no matter what is
in out past we can always change it
in the future.
The ending of the movie was
inventive, but weak. It could have
been a lot better. So, as you read this,
please heed my words and save your
money and wait until the video comes
out if you really must see it. Please,
save your time, and watch Miami
Vice, Crocket and Tubbs miss you.
