ENTERPRISE TEAM
BRINGS HOME TWO
TROPHIES
For the first time, six students from
Penn State Behrend Erie, The Behrend
College, took part in the Students in
Free Enterprise (SIFE) competition
Tuesday, April 6 in Cleveland. Under
the direction of Dr. Jeffrey W. Trailer,
assistant professor of management, the
team brought home trophies for Rookie
of the Year and second runner-up in
League A. During the award ceremony
Trailer received a plaque recognizing
his service as a Sam Walton Free
Enterprise Fellow.
Students participating included Beth
Shickler of Harborcreek, Matt
Inderlied of Fairview, Jillanne
Torrance of Erie, Lance Dunn of
Wattsburg, Bryan Docherty of
Glenshaw, and John Hodemy of Erie.
Each student was required to complete
50 hours of a community outreach
business activity such as market
analysis, profitability assessment,
marketing assessment, or marketing
potential. Fifteen business owners
and executives judged the students
on their documented results, their
presentation skills, the number of
people impacted by their outreach,
and several other criteria.
“This was an awesome
opportunity,” said Trailer. “We
competed with students from Ohio,
Michigan, New York, and
Pennsylvania, and came out very
well. We’re already looking forward
to next year..”

FOUNDER OF ANSYS TO
SPEAK AT BEHREND
SENIOR PROJECTS DAY
Dr. John Swanson, founder and chief
technologist of ANS YS, Inc. will be the
keynote speaker at Senior Projects 99,
to be held Saturday, May 1 from 8:30
a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Engineering
Complex at Penn State Erie, the
Behrend College. At this event,
graduating seniors in the engineering
programs present research and
industrial projects they have completed
during the year.
“Many of the senior projects presented
provide solutions to real-world
engineering problems,” said David
Roth, associate professor of
engineering and faculty sponsor for the
day. “We invite representatives of
industry to bring their challenging
problems to our students, who work to
develop practical solutions.” Roth
noted that senior projects day often
draws many product design and
manufacturing representatives from
local and regional companies, who
come to meet the graduates and recruit
potential employees. “Although,” he
said, “by senior projects day, many of
these students have already accepted
jobs in industry,” we are particularly
pleased to have Dr. Swanson with us
for Senior Projects Day, said Dr.
Richard Progelhof, director of the
School of Engineering and Engineering
Technology. Swanson, who will speak
in Roche Hall at 12:45 p.m., is
internationally recognized as an
innovator in the application of finite
element methods to engineering. He
founded his company in 1970 to
develop, support, and market the
ANSYS program, a finite-element
software code widely used in the
computer-aided engineering industry.

WOMEN’S HISTORY
MONTH IN NIAGARA
HALL
Niagara Hall Students, and RAs,
celebrated Women's History Month,
in March, by putting together two
informative bulletin boards.
The first, a joint effort of RA Niki
Bruniany, and resident Jackie
Nieves, is on display in the west side
hallway of Niagara Hall Lobby. The
other was on display on Niagara’s
second (women's) floor.
HALL COUNCIL
ORGANIZES EGG HUNT
IN NIAGARA HALL
Niagara Hall Council got students
involved in the spirit of the season,
by organizing an egg hunt for the
residents. The activity rewarded
students with candy filled plastic
eggs, and offered a welcome break
from studies, on Thursday, April 1,
1999. Niagara Hall Council officers,
and RA staff, were really pleased
with the results of their efforts.
BENACCI FAMILY
ENDOWS
SCHOLARSHIP
Penn State Erie, The Behrend
College, has received a $500,000 gift
from the Joseph Benacci family to
create the Joseph A. and Berit I.
Benacci Family Scholarship. “We
made the decision when everyone
was gathered around the table last
Thanksgiving,” said Joe Benacci,
CEO of T.W.L. Corp., a trucking and
warehousing company with interests
in real estate, transportation, and
distribution. “Our family has been
so blessed. We're at a point now
where it’s time to give back to the
community, and I’ve always had a
soft spot in my heart for Behrend."
Benacci began his academic career
at Penn State Behrend in the early
fifties, before it was possible to
receive a four-year degree at the
College. He continued his studies at
University Park, but was unable to
complete his degree due to the
untimely death of his father. “Joe has
developed a remarkably successful
business,” said Dr. John Lilley,
provost and dean. "Given his own
experience, it is particularly
inspiring for his family to help make
education possible for others.”
A member of the Erie Conference
on Community Development,
Benacci is also on the Penn State
Behrend Alumni Society Board and
serves on the board of directors of
the Penn State Behrend Council of
Fellows. Berit has been involved
with both the Erie Philharmonic and

the Hamot Aid Society, and served
on Behrend's anniversary
committee. Dr. Christopher Rcber,
associate provost for Advancement
and University Relations at Penn
State Behrend, said the gift will
make an important impact in the
lives of students. “Many of our
students work between twenty and
forty hours a week to support their
education, he said. The Benacci’s
gift will make a real difference in
students lives, and, because it is an
endowment, the College will be
able to offer this resource on an
ongoing basis,” he said. The
Benacci’s son, Ray, a 1987
graduate of Penn State with a
degree in business logistics, serves
as president of the family’s
corporation. “We have more than
100 employees,” he said, “and
those employees have families. I
feel a sense of responsibility to
them.” It is one of the reasons he
and his brothers and sisters agreed
to support the Joseph A. and Berit
I. Benacci Family Scholarship,
which will give first consideration
to employees of the corporation
and their relatives.
The Benaccis made the gift as a
family. Their children include
Joseph, a plastic surgeon at Pitt
County Memorial Hospital, a part
of East Carolina University in
Greenville, N.C.; Kristina
Hannum, who received her Ph.D.
in higher education from the
University of Florida at
Gainesville; Ray, president of
T.W.L. Corp.; Jennifer, a 1997
graduate of the University of
Northern Arizona in education; and
Karl, who plans to attend Penn
State Behrend in the fall. “They
were very receptive to the idea,”
said Joe. “We’ve tried to teach
them that if you have strong beliefs,
you need to make things happen.”
The family informed employees
of T.W.L. Corp. about the
scholarship before it was
announced publicly and plans to
promote its availability on a regular
basis. “We want everyone to feel
encouraged to take advantage of
this opportunity for higher
education,” said Kristina Hannum,
“Even if they haven’t thought about
it in the past.”
