SPRING
COMMENCEMENT
The Spring 1999 Commencement
ceremony will be held on Saturday,
May 15, at noon on the Reed Union
Building lawn. In case of inclement
weather, two ceremonies will he held.
The first will begin at 12:00 noon and
the second at 2:3opm, both in Erie Hall.
Seniors who intend to participate in
the graduation ceremony must
purchase a cap and gown from the
bookstore. Prices are as follows:
Baccalaureate-black (keeper) $22.75,
Associate- blue (Keeper) $22.75,
Graduate- Mack cap-gown, hood
(keeper)- $46.00 and Graduate black
cap, gown, hood (rental)-$35.25.
The deadline to order caps and gowns
is April 9. Beginning April 6,
graduation announcements may be
purchased on a walk-in basis from the
Media and Instructional Support
Center (MISC) in the Academic
Building. The cost is 35 cents for each
announcement. Please call the Provosts
Office at 898-6160 by May 3if you
plan to attend.
ELM CITY ENSEMBLE AT
BEHREND APRIL 13
Music at Noon: The Logan
Wintergarden Series will close its
1998-99 season with a performance by
the Elm City Ensemble on Tuesday,
April 13 at Penn State Erie, The
Behrend College. Guests are invited to
bring a brown-hag lunch to the
noontime concert, which takes place
in the Wintergarden of the Reed Union
Building. All performances in the
Logan Series are free and open to the
public.
This award-winning chamber music
ensemble was formed in 1995 at Yale
University and includes graduates of
Juilliard, Eastman, and the Mozarteum
in Salzburg. Opening to critical
acclaim, throughout the 1996-97
season Elm City Ensemble received
the top prizes of four national chamber
music competitions and other prizes
from the Contemporary Record
Society’s National Chamber Music
Competition and the Pro Piano
Competition in New York
Members of the quartet include
Elm City Ensemble
Garrick Zoeter, clarinet; Ingrid
Sweeney, violin, Rebecca Patterson,
cello, and Jessica Bruser, piano. As
much as they appreciate music
written in the past, they are very
much fans contemporary classical
music and have found that a winning
formula for the group. We try to
break down barriers with our
audiences and invite them to open
up their ears to new possibilities, said
Bruser.
A relatively young group, the Elm
City Ensemble is already recognized
for its interpretation of contemporary
musical pieces. They have played at
the Norfolk Music Festival, the
International Festival of Arts and
Ideas in New Haven, the Winners
Concert of the Carmel Competition,
the Winners Concert of the Fischoff
Competition, and St. Patrick s
Cathedral. More information about

the college to perform in an informal
setting. The series is made possible

CONFERENCE
Penn State Erie, The Behrend
College, will host the 1999 North
Central Section regional American
Society for Engineering Educators
(ASEE) conference on Thursday and
Friday, April 8-9. Representatives
from more than 34 different
academic institutions covering 14
states will collectively share ideas
that encourage continuous
improvement in the quality of
engineering and engineering
technology education.
The conference theme is
Reshaping Engineering and
Engineering Technology. In keeping
with the theme, 75 educators will
present papers at sessions dealing
with improving the freshman

teaching methods, academic
collaboration with industry, outreach in
continuing education, and other issues.
Exhibitors from computer aided
design and analysis companies Prentice
Hall, Solidworks, and ANSYS, Inc.,
will be on hand to display the latest
technology software available for use
in the classroom. Local industries
including Lord Corporation, FMC, and
Erie Plastics will sponsor scheduled
break periods to provide time for
participants’ discussion. P.C. Hoop
Roche, president of Erie Plastics and
chair of the Penn State Behrend Council
of Fellows, will present the luncheon
keynote address, Business and
Engineering:
Strange Bedfellows at the Millennium.
An awards dinner honoring the best
paper presentation will conclude the
conference.

REVUE-8.R.U.N.0.S
Matchbox players is proud to present
8.R.U.N.0.5., an original musical
revue about college life at Behrend.
The show was created, written, and
produced by members of Matchbox
players, Behrend’s theatre club.
8.R.U.N.0.5. will be preformed in the
studio Theatre on April 15, 16, 17, and
18 at 8:00pm and April 18 at 4:oopni.
Reserved seating is limited and
reservations will be taken beginning
April 5. Call the Studio Theatre at 898-
6016 for reservations. General
Admission is $3.00, and each
performance is FREE to all Penn State
students with ID. Come out and

CORNELL ASTRONOMER
TO SPEAK AT BEHREND
Dr. Yervant Terzian. astronomer and
director of the New York State Pew
Cluster of Colleges and Universities
for the improvement of undergraduate
science education, will present The
Magnificent University on Thursday,
April 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Penn State
Erie, The Behrend College. His
lecture, which is free and open to the
public, will take place in the Otto
Behrend Science Building.
Terzian has been associated with the
Arecibo Observatory since
1965. His areas of study include the
physics of the interstellar medium, HII
regions, the evolution of.late type
stars, binary galaxies, colliding
galaxies, and the physics of planetary
nebulae. With students and
collaborators he has used the Arecibo
radio telescope, the Palomar five
meter telescope, the International
Ultraviolet Space Explorer, and others.
Calendar
His current work uses the Hubble
Space Telescope to study the
detailed structure of planetary
nebulae.
Ter/.ian's lecture will explore
the universe from a historical
perspective, including modern
cosmological theories developed
using the scientific method. His
presentation includes astronomical
slides taken with the world’s largest
telescopes and with cameras from
spacecraft.

Schroeder was elected to
Coloiado's First Congressional
District seat in 1972 and went on to
serve 1 2 terms, making her the
longest-serving woman in the
House of Representatives. An
outspoken and independent voice
within the Democratic Party,
Schroeder was Dean of
Congressional women and co
chaired the Congressional Caucus
on Women's Issues for ten years.
She served on the House Judiciary
Committee, the Post Office and
Civil Service Committee, and was
the first woman to served on the
House Armed Services Committee.
Under Schroeder's leadership, the
Caucus on Women’s Issues
launched an effort to improve
Health Equity Act,
investigating gender discrepancies
in health research and services. As
chair of the House Select committee i
on Children, Youth, and Families
from 1991-93, she saw the Family
and Medical Leave Act and the
National Institutes of Health
Revitalization Act passed in 1993.

Patricia Schroeder has been a leader
in the cause of education and a

year she retired undefeated from the
House, she was named to the national
women's Hall ot Fame and labeled by
Oliver North as one of the country's 25
most dangerous politicians.
Scluoeder. a 1964 graduate ol
Harvard Law School, currently serves
as president and CEO of the Association
of American Publishers, the national
trade organization of the U S. Book
Publishing industry. She is the author
of two books. Champion of the Great

Mess.
