The Behrend College Beacon - February 4, 1999 page 10- Lady Lions’ streak hits six by Jason Snyder sports editor The Behrend Lady Lions, after a slow start to the 1998-99 season have won six straight going into last night’s game against Lake Erie College. The Lions are off to a 5-0 reeord in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) with a 12-6 record overall. The Behrend women are coming olf a 53-46 win over AMCC opponent Laßoche in the Lions' only game this past week. In the AMCC match-up, the Lady Behrend men take over conference lead by Matt Buser staff writer The Penn Stale Behrend men's basketball team rolled through a pair of opponents in this past week's play, crushing Hilbert College 71- 41, and beating conference foe Laßoche 75-62. Last night, the men played host to conference rival Lake Erie College. Details of last night's game will be in the next Beacon. With the pair of wins, the Lions improved to 14-3 overall. 4-1 in the conference. Behrend has won twelve of their last fourteen, and are in first place in the AMCC. Their impressive overall play has them ranked fourth in the latest NCAA East Regional Poll. The men traveled to New York to face regional opponent Hilbert College on Wednesday, January 27. Erin Phillips and Carrie Nestor sparked the Lions in the first half accounting for 10 of Behrend’s 20 points. Laßoche was held to 6-31 (19%) shooting in the first half which enabled the Lions to enter the locker room with a 20-15 halftime lead. Behrend picked up their play in the second half offensively, as they went 10-23 (43% ) from the field and 13-14 (93%) from the free-throw line. The Lions outrebounded Laßoche 48-40 which also contributed to the win. Laßoehe's scoring duo of Kristy Hiben score, and a 71-41 victory. Chris Hughes and Brock Bovaird led the Lions in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Bovaird was perfect from the floor, shooting 4-4 from the field including 1-1 from behind the arc and 2-2 from the charity stripe. Behrend played host to Laßoche College on Saturday, January 30. Forward Brian Emick was the highlight of a balanced attack for the Lions. Emick led four players in double figures with nineteen points, and also collected a career-high fifteen rebounds. Others scoring in double figures were guards Jason Paloskey and Brock Bovaird with fifteen each, and forward Chris Hughes with twelve. Paloskey also contributed six assists, and Bovaird contributed four assists and three steals. Strong work on the boards made up for lackluster shooting (12/33, 36%’), and Behrend led at halftime 31 -28. Cathy Alton was the only Redhawk to reach double figures with 11 points. The Lady Lions prevailed with a well-balanced scoring attack as Phillips, Nestor and Jen O’Lare all reached double-figures for the night with 19,12 and 11 points, respectively. Phillips also pulled down 10 rebounds and shot 4-7 from the field and 11-12 from the foul line. Nestor provided a spark for the Lions both offensively and defensively with 5-8 shooting, seven assists, seven rebounds and five steals. Behrend entered last night’s game 38-28, including a 14-6 advantage on the offensive glass. Behrend continued a season-long trend by playing very well in the second half. They shot 57% (13-23) while limiting Laßoche to 42% (10-24). They made .3-5 three-pointers (60%) and 15-19 foul shots (79%), while Laßoche made only 1 -8 three-pointers (13%) and 13-18 foul shots (72% ). Behrend outscored Laßoche 44-34 in the half and gave the Erie Hall faithful a 75-62 win. Following last night’s game against Lake Erie, the men will finish a stretch of playing five straight conference games. Upcoming games for the Lions are Saturday, February 6, when they travel to Frostburg; Wednesday, February 10, at home against Pitl- Bradford, who beat Behrend in an earlier contest; and Saturday, February 13, when Pitt-Greensburg visits Erie Hall. In the first meeting between these two team, the Lions won convincingly, 70-32. Lake Erie is 6-11 overall and 0-5 in the AMCC. Results to this game will be in next week's Beacon. Behrend will then travel to Frostburg on February 6 to face their AMCC foe. After that, the Lady Lions will return to Erie Hall for three games. The Penn State Behrend women’s basketball team is all fired up after their explosion into the AMCC. One of the many contributing players to their remark able record is Tiffany Buck. Buck has been a contributor to the women's basketball team since she was a freshman. As far as defense goes, Buck is very quick. She aver ages about 1.1 steals per game. Her quickness donates greatly to the Lady Lions’ full court press. With a well rounded player like Buck on the team it is no wonder the Lady Lions are on such a roll. Buck accredits the winning streak to the team. She says: “The team is playing well together and with confi dence.” She also believes that the team is gelling well together, and has a promising future.
