Housing contracts due:
more students means less housing
by Will Jordan
editor in chief
By now, all on-campus returning
students should have reviewed a con
tract for the fall 1999 housing w ith
instructions, in their on-campus mail
box. Those who have not reviewed a
contract package should go and ob
tain one from the Housing and Food
Services office.
In the past, contracts were accepted
in hopes that Housing would be able
to offer housing to all students return-
ing contracts. However they may
have the situation where they have
Bobby Seale continued from
long way.” Seale stated. He went on
to say tnat at tne age ot 3 ne was a
carpenter with his father and by the
age of 18 he was an architect. He is
also a Jazz drurner and a stand up
comedian. Seale told several stories
about the BPP. He told stories to show
the equality between male and female
members of the BPP. His stories also
explained how the BPP evolved.
Following his round table
discussion, a dinner was held in Reed
Commons. Throughout the dinner the
Behrend Gospel Choir "Ultimate
Praise." After the dinner, Seale gave
a lecture in Reed 117. Russell John
Baptiste, 04 MIS, introduced Seale.
Seale began the lecture with the first
time he heard Dr. King speak in 1962.
The rally was about boycotting
Wondcrbread. Scale was in the
United States Air Force from 1955
until 1959.
In 1962. Seale began learning about
his Afro-American heritage. He was
influenced to do this by a friend who
was in a street corner rally. It was
after the death of Malcolm X that
Scale and his friend Hewey Newton
began to form the BPP. After writing
the Ten Point program. Seale and
Newton took the first two paragraphs
of the United States Constitution,
paraphrased them, then put them at
the end of the Ten Points.
In the beginning, the BPP raised
funds to get guns by selling the "little
red book" that contained the ideas of
Mao- Tse Tong. "They sold like
hotcakes. But we had never read it"
Settle said. After getting guns and
members, the leaders began training
the members to use the guns.
Seale then told a story about the
first time the BPP went out into the
community. They observed a police
officer giving out a ticket. When the
more contracts than space available.
All assignments arc made on a first
come first serve basis
The meeting deadline for housing
contracts is 5:00 p.m., Friday, Janu
ary 29. Housing and Food Services
asks everyone to turn in their own
housing contract. Students should
bring their i.d. with them when turn
ing in their contract.
For the first time, single rooms will
be available in Ohio Hall. In order to
reeieve this type of housing your con
tract must read “single" under hall and
room choices. Those who wish to live
in single rooms should also write
"Ohio Hall Single." Otlierw ise Hous-
officer became aware of the presence
of (he BPP anci tneir guns ne siowly
got in to his car and left.
Seale said that the difference
between the BPP and other
organizations was the fact that they
had multi-leadership. He like to think
of the BPP as “an extension of Martin
Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and
Nelson Mandela."
After his lecture there was a
Question and Answer session. Several
questions were asked including one
about how he felt about the whole
Clinton situation. "I could care less
about Clinton getting into some sex.
The Republican's arc just mad because
Clinton kicked their booties." Seale
said.
Several students had comments
about Bobby Scale. "1 think the
speaker was great. 1 do not care where
you come from, your race, color,
ethnicity, or social standing. Fveryone
could have learned something from
Bobby Seale. His idea of being a
'progressive humanist' should be
understood and strived by all." Scott
Miller. ('4. Plastics Fngineering

"Being able to actually come face
to lace with a co-founder ol the Black
Panther Party was an honor. While
listening to his speech. 1 could actually
feel the vibes of that time. I
acknowledge Bobby Seale tor
correcting those mistakes that were
portrayed in the Panther's movie. I
also learned that through his
willingness to do whatever he was able
to win justice. I do believe that
because of Seale's willingness to go
to the extent and even take a more
detailed look into a situation, he was
willing to reach justice. Seale made
me realize that if you want something
if ... .
ing and Food will think that you are
requesting a double room.
This year the contract submission
has been moved to Reed Commons,
but only for the first morning at 9:30
p.m., Sunday, January 24. The Com
mons wil be open so the line can be
gin. The doors will be closing at 7:30
a.m., Monday, January 25. Contracts
will be accepted at 8:00 a.m. in the
Housing office in Dobbins through
5:00 p.m., Friday, January 29.
Housing and Food Services would

bad enough, you should go for it,
because if you see something that
isn’t right you should try to correct
it. But if you choose noy to, then you
don’t have a right to say a damn
thing” Angelique Parker, 04, MIS
Cheon Graham, 04 Psychology,
said, “Bobby Seale was very
inspiring. He showed me a different
view of the Black Panther Party than
I had been exposed to. He was very
informative and I am glad that I had
the chance to meet such a wonderful
and intelligent man.”
Randy Rowles, 05
Communications, said, “I found the
lecture by Bobby Seale both
profound and motivating. It was nice
to hear from someone with real
initiative and desire to make things
better."
Matt Elias, 05 Meteorology, said,
“I thought Bobby Seale had many
interesting things to say about the
Black Panther Party. He made clear
to me that most of the misconceptions
about the party are not true. I think
he is a very intelligent man and I
would like to see him return to
Behrend as a speaker in the future.”
Erika Forde, 04 Psychology, said,
"I felt Bobby Seale was an inspiration
to all. He enlightened myself and
many others about the true meaning
behind the Black Panthers.
Michael Ross. 02 PI SC, said,”
Bobby Seale was the best speaker I
have ever heard in a long time. He
helped all of us get a better
understanding of what Black History
Month means to him. As well as that,
he explained why and how he and
Hewey Newton started the Black
Panther Party. He was just an
amazing speaker, because he told the
stories the way they happend, word
for word."
Russell John Baptiste, 04 MIS,
said,” Amazing.”
