page 10- The Behrend College Beacon - January 21, 1999 Behrend women atop AMCC standings By Jason Snyder sports editor The Penn State Behrend women’s basketball team is off to a 2-0 start in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) with convincing wins over Lake Erie and Frostburg State. The Lady Lions entered conference play at Lake Erie with a 6-6 record, winning five of eight previously. Lake Erie entered the match-up at .500 with a 5-5 record. Behrend controlled the game from the opening tip as the women cruised to a 40-20 halftime lead. Both teams shot well in the first half with the Lions shooting 62% from the field. Lake Erie shot 56% from the field including 33% from behind the are. Behrend continued their solid shooting in the second half behind a 7-7 shooting night for freshman Erin Phillips. Phillips finished the game with 14 points with Jen O’Lare leading all scorers with 16. The strong defensive play of the Lions throughout the game enabled Behrend to pull away as Lake Erie could only muster up 12 points in the second half. Carrie Nestor added seven points, four assists, four steals and four rebounds to aid the Lions' 70- 32 romp. The win moved Behrend to 1 -0 in conference play and 7- 6 overall. The Lions then returned home for "Pack the Gym Night” on January 16th against conference rival Frostburg Slate. Frostburg entered the game with a four game winning streak including a convincing 75-48 win over AMCC’s Laßoche. Frostburg, however, had to compensate for the loss of their star player Shannon Rexrode who went down to a broken ankle previously in the week. Rexrode led her team in scoring with 18 ppg and ranked second in rebound with 12 per game. The Lions took quick advantage of their opponent as they established themselves early in the paint. Forwards Jaqueline Jackson and Erin Phillips accounted for 15 of Behrend’s 3 1 first-half points. The pair also controlled the boards with a combined 13 rebounds in the first half. Phillips would go on to pull down 17 boards on the game. Frostburg's Annie Rivers kept the game respectable with 16 points for the game. Three Lions reached double figures in scoring with Lisa Sanders leading the team with 16 points followed by Jackson and Phillips with 14 and 13, respectively. Nestor again contributed strongly with nine assists, eight points, and three steals. The Lions clinched the game with 15-26 (58%) shooting in the second half with 3-5 shooting from three-point land. Sanders and Tiffany Buck combined for five of Behrend’s six three pointers on the game. The Lions outscored Frostburg 44-33 in the second half on their way to a 75- 55 win. The wins have Behrend standing atop the AMCC standings at 2-0 with I-0 Pitt- Bradford right behind. The Lions traveled to Pitt-Bradford on January 20th in hopes of avenging an emotional AMCC finals loss in the 1997-98 season. The Behrend women looked to contain the strong scoring attack of the Panthers as three starters currently average ten or more points. Panthers’ senior forward Lora Figley leads the team with 15.6 ppg and 10.6 rpg. Results to the game will be in next week’s Beacon. The Lady Lions will then travel to Pitt-Greensburg on January 23 to face the AMCC’s only other undefeated team. Behrend’s next home game will be on January 25 against Washington and Jefferson with tip-off at 6:00 p.m. The Athletic Dept, will be having a "Student Organization Night,” where student’s can win a free pizza party for their organization. FSU played catch-up, and a foul shot with 6:30 remaining closed the gap to 50-39. But Behrend played strong during the stretch run and held on for the impressive win. Frostburg chose to run a full-court press the entire game, despite Behrend’s ability to break it a ma jority of the time. “Because they pressed us, we had to adjust,” guard Jason Paloskey commented. “Everyone played un selfishly and did a good job finding the open man.” Statistically, Paloskey was the most unselfish of all, as he led the team with eight assists to go along with his eight points. Despite Frostburg’s team height advantage, Behrend owned the of fensive and defensive glass. Be hrend out-rebounded their opponent You Make The Call! Are you still interested NBA now that the lock-out has ended? “I’ve adapted to not watching it, so I really didn’t miss it all that much. The shorter season will definitely make the league a lot different. But Jordan is gone; my team, the Bulls, will be completely different; so I don’t have as much to watch for anyway.” Damion Miller, 06, MIS “I know I wouldn’t pay to see a game, but I am interested to see how the general population responds - if they’ll still go. I am interested in seeing how the whole situation pans out.” Matt Bresee, 06, Conimu “I’ll still be a fan because I love the game. College basketball is better, though. The new cap restrictions will send the better players to different teams, and will cause the older players to try to stick around longer. There will also be a conflict after the next draft, because there will be two crops of players with little or no NBA experience.” Chris Buchanan, 02, Pol Sci “I’m interested to see how the rookies play, like Mike Bibby and (Kieth) ‘Tractor’ Traylor. Yeah, Jordan retired, but I never liked him anyway.” Jack Proper, 07, Commu “I’ll be interested to see which free agents go where. And I guess watching the NBA is better than watching the NHL.” WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TB-6J Behrend Player FG 3-point FT Points Buck 2-12 2-8 0-0 6 Nestor 2-5 0-1 4-6 8 Sanders 6-10 3-4 1-2 16 O’Lare 4-10 0-0 0-0 8 Phillips 3-6 0-0 7-8 13 McDivitt 2-3 1-2 0-0 5 Jackson 6-8 0-0 2-9 14 Costanzo 1-1 0-0 1-2 3 Weigold 0-0 0-0 2-3 2 CharnockO-O 0-0 0-0 0 Totals 26-55 6-15 17-30 75 Assists: 19, Rebounds: 44, Steals: 10, Blocks: l,TO: 19 Frostburg Rivers 8-18 0-0 0-0 16 Frisby 3-10 0-0 3-3 9 Rug 3-7 1-3 0-0 7 Conklin 3-8 0-0 0-0 6 Calhoun 2-6 0-0 1-2 5 Long 1-1 0-0 1-1 3 Kane 0-0 0-1 3-4 3 Yahnert 1-2 0-0 0-0 2 Twigg 1-4 0-1 0-0 2 Abucevicz 1-3 0-0 0-0 2 Morris 0-0 0-0 0-0 0 Paesani 0-0 0-0 0-0 0 Loya 0-2 0-0 0-0 0 Totals 23-61 1-5 8-10 55 Assists: 11, Rebounds: 36, Steals: 13, Blocks: l,TO: 17 Bovaird for two! photo courtesy of athletics dept. in the Tom Duska, 08, Commu Behrend 70 Lake Erie 32 Behrend 40 30 70 Lake Erie 20 12 32 Behrend Player FG 3-point FT Points Buck 3-9 0-3 0-0 6 Nestor 3-5 0-1 1-2 7 Sanders 1-4 0-3 0-0 2 O’Lare 7-8 0-0 2-2 16 Phillips 7-7 0-0 0-0 14 McDivitt 2-5 0-2 0-0 4 Jackson 2-2 0-0 1-2 5 Costanzo 3-4 0-0 2-2 8 Weigold 1-4 0-2 0-0 2 Chamock 3-3 0-0 0-0 6 Totals 32-51 0-11 6-8 70 Assists: 17, Rebounds: 20, Steals: 10, Blocks: 2, TO: 17 Lake Erie Larkin 6-11 0-0 0-2 12 Berardinelli 4-12 0-0 3-7 11 Frabolta 2-3 1-1 0-0 5 Williams 1-7 0-2 0-0 2 Erjavec 1-2 0-0 0-0 2 Gorrell 0-4 0-1 0-0 0 Ford 0-1 0-0 0-0 0 White 0-2 0-0 0-2 0 Ellis DID NOT PLAY Totals 14-42 1-4 3-11 32 Assists: 4, Rebounds: 18, Steals: 11, Blocks: 3, TO: 24 37-19.
