Behrend men
By Matt Buser

The Penn State Behrend men’s
basketball team stayed busy over
break, playing in a tournament in
Rochester, hosting another, totaling
five games. The men won four of
the five contests, highlighted by a
convincing win over nationally
ranked St. John Fisher this past
Saturday. The Behrend squad’s
record stood at 9-2 as they began
defense of their Allegheny
Mountain Collegiate Conference
(AMCC) title last night against Lake
Erie. Details of last nights game
will be in next week’s Beacon.
The men traveled to Rochester,
N.Y., for the Rochester Institute of
Technology’s (RIT) Brodie
Tournament on Friday and Saturday,
December 11-12. In the tournament
opener, Behrend defeated York
College 57-52. Strong shooting
(52% overall, 65% second half)
helped propel them to the win.
Guard Brock Bovaird paced the
Lions with seventeen points, five
rebounds, four steals, and three
assists. Guard Jason Paloskey
contributed witli fourteen points.
Shooting was Behrend's downfall
in the tournament championship
against host team RIT. The men
were defeated 64-50 thanks in part
to a lackluster 35% (19-54) shooting
on the night. Forward Andy
Lawrence led the Lions with ten
points, followed by Paloskey with
eight and forward Brian Emick with
seven. Bovaird had an off-night
shooting (2-14), but did lead the
Lions with seven rebounds, five
assists, and three steals.

Approaching the midpoint of the
Behrend women’s basketball season,
the Lady Lions have maintained a
.500 record at 6-6 despite a
challenging road trip during
Christmas break.
Before taking their game across
the country, the Lady Lions hosted
Bethany College. Behrend jumped
on their opponent early taking a 33-
30 lead into halftime. Carrie Nestor
sparked the Lions with her
playmaking which resulted in 11
assists to go along with her six
points.
Bethany’s Jill Kamerer, however,
led her team to a second half spurt
behind her 22 points. Behrend was
outscored 33-20 in the second half
to give Bethany a 63-53 victory. The
loss moved the Lions to 4-3 on the
year.
The Lady Lions then embarked on
a trip to Las Vegas for the Inaugural
Next Level Desert Classic. The

When Sunday rolled around, it was
all business as the women prepared
for their first round game against
tournament favorite Nazareth on
Monday. The practice paid off as
Behrend pulled off a 60-58 upset
behind a solid team effort. Erin
Phillips was the game’s high scorer
with 15 points followed by Tiffany
Buck and Jacqueline Jackson who
scored 11 and 10, respectively.
The win put the Behrend women in
the championship game against the
Babson Beavers the following day.
Despite trailing at the half 34-28, the
Lady Lions were able to cut the lead
behind the 15 points of Kate
Costanzo. However, a three-point
attempt by Nestor at the buzzer fell
short allowing the Lady Beavers to
escape with a 58-55 tournament win.
