page 8- The Belt rend College Beacon - January 14, 1999 Behrend men By Matt Buser staff writer The Penn State Behrend men’s basketball team stayed busy over break, playing in a tournament in Rochester, hosting another, totaling five games. The men won four of the five contests, highlighted by a convincing win over nationally ranked St. John Fisher this past Saturday. The Behrend squad’s record stood at 9-2 as they began defense of their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) title last night against Lake Erie. Details of last nights game will be in next week’s Beacon. The men traveled to Rochester, N.Y., for the Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT) Brodie Tournament on Friday and Saturday, December 11-12. In the tournament opener, Behrend defeated York College 57-52. Strong shooting (52% overall, 65% second half) helped propel them to the win. Guard Brock Bovaird paced the Lions with seventeen points, five rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Guard Jason Paloskey contributed witli fourteen points. Shooting was Behrend's downfall in the tournament championship against host team RIT. The men were defeated 64-50 thanks in part to a lackluster 35% (19-54) shooting on the night. Forward Andy Lawrence led the Lions with ten points, followed by Paloskey with eight and forward Brian Emick with seven. Bovaird had an off-night shooting (2-14), but did lead the Lions with seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Five players scored in double figures as the Lions rolled to a7l -53 win. Bovaird led the team with fifteen points, followed by Lawrence with thirteen, forward Chris Hughes with twelve, forward John Park with eleven, and Emick with ten. Behrend erupted for 47 points in the second half thanks to 63% shooting on 19 of 30 shots, including 7of 10 from three-point range. For the game, the team shot 54% (28-52), including 59% (10-17) from three-point range. Emick made all three three-pointers that he attempted in the game The Lions hosted the Behrend Classic at Erie Hall on Friday and Saturday, January 8-9. In the first game, Behrend used strong three point and foul shooting to beat Medaille 65-51. For the game, Behrend shot 41% (11-27) from beyond the arc and 78% (18-23) from the foul line. Also, the team forced sixteen turnovers and committed only seven. Emick led the team with eight rebounds. The highlight of the evening was in the first half when Paloskey, a senior, hit a three-pointer to give him 1,001 points in his career. Paloskey finished with five points, and ranks tenth all-time in points at Penn State Behrend. Strong second half shooting was again a factor in the Lions’ win. In the half, Behrend shot 63% (15- 24) overall, including 67% (8-12) from three-point range, and made 78% (7-9) free throws. Hughes led Behrend with seventeen points and Vegas Lions By Jason Snyder sports editor Approaching the midpoint of the Behrend women’s basketball season, the Lady Lions have maintained a .500 record at 6-6 despite a challenging road trip during Christmas break. Before taking their game across the country, the Lady Lions hosted Bethany College. Behrend jumped on their opponent early taking a 33- 30 lead into halftime. Carrie Nestor sparked the Lions with her playmaking which resulted in 11 assists to go along with her six points. Bethany’s Jill Kamerer, however, led her team to a second half spurt behind her 22 points. Behrend was outscored 33-20 in the second half to give Bethany a 63-53 victory. The loss moved the Lions to 4-3 on the year. The Lady Lions then embarked on a trip to Las Vegas for the Inaugural Next Level Desert Classic. When Sunday rolled around, it was all business as the women prepared for their first round game against tournament favorite Nazareth on Monday. The practice paid off as Behrend pulled off a 60-58 upset behind a solid team effort. Erin Phillips was the game’s high scorer with 15 points followed by Tiffany Buck and Jacqueline Jackson who scored 11 and 10, respectively. The win put the Behrend women in the championship game against the Babson Beavers the following day. Despite trailing at the half 34-28, the Lady Lions were able to cut the lead behind the 15 points of Kate Costanzo. However, a three-point attempt by Nestor at the buzzer fell short allowing the Lady Beavers to escape with a 58-55 tournament win. After a two week break, the Behrend women hosted 6-2 Thiel College. The Lions fell behind early and trailed 23-21 at the half. They play host to Frostburg on Saturday, January 16, for “Pack the Gym Night.” The men then travel to Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday, January 20. held Thiel to 4-22 shooting in the second half as Phillips, Nestor and Costanzo all scored in double-digits. Behrend outscored their opponent 33- 17 after the break for a convincing 54- 40 win. The Lions then began a three game road trip as they travelled to Waynesburg. Behrend battled through the highly competitive game which saw the teams tied at 60 at the end ol regulation. Waynesburg then outscored Behrend 7-3 in the extra session to hand the Lions their fifth loss of the season. Behrend then travelled to Grove City in hopes of avenging a 61-54 loss on December 4 in Erie Hall. The Lions once again had troubles stopping Karin Hendrickson who averaged 18 points and 5 assists per game in the two meetings. Lisa Sanders led the Lions with 12 points as Nestor followed with 11. The 69-59 loss dropped the Lions record to 6-6. Behrend’s next game will be in Erie Hall on January 16 at 6:00 against AMCC rival Frostburg.
