Four photography students from Penn State Erie, Ihe Behrend College, garnered six awards in the Art Mania Exhibit at First Night Erie, the community is annual New fears Eve celebration. Heather Sees, a freshman business major from Mount Jewett, received the grand prize in the College cat egory for her photograph titled Barely Making It. Butler Sophomore Bethany Boarts, in the division ot un dergraduate studies, received two honorable mentions, as did Matthew Meyer, a junior biology major trom Erie. Tracy Obarsky, a sophomore in meteorology from New Carlisle, lnd. also received an honorable mention. “I’m delighted that these stu dents did so well,” said Behrend pho tography instructor Karol lomczak. “I love teaching this class and watch ing the students’ work mature as they learn new techniques.” I’m very proud of their accomplishments. Bobby Seale, founding chairman and national organizer of the Black Panther Party, will speak at Penn State Erie The Behrend Col lege. on Monday. Jan. IS at 4 p.m. and at 8:30 p.m. His presentations, which take place in the Reed Union Building, are part ol the college's davlong celebration ol Marlin Luther King Jr.'s life. At 4 p.m.. in addition to re marks by Scale, the students, (acuity, and staff of the College w ill gather to view a video re-enactment of the bus trip to the March on Washing ton and a student act portraying Dr. King s "1 Have a Dream" speech. At 8:30 p.m. Seale will present his lec- Seale, along with Huey Newton, formed the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in 1966. The party ad vocated the right to self-defense and worked to organize a power to the people revolution against what they saw as iiMitutionali/ed racism, dis crimination. and police brutality. Under Seale's leadership the Black Panthers grew from 400 mem bers to more than 5,000 members in 40 chapters and branches across the United States. Today Seale is the creator and director of REACH Inc., an organi zation that teaches ellective commu- nity organizing to young people. He is also a volunteer community liaison w ith Temple University’s Department of African and African-American Studies. Seale is the author of several books, including Seize the Time, which was written while he was jailed without bail for two years, and his autobiography, A Lonely Rage.
