The Lady Lions opened the week with a trip to Washington and Jefferson College on Wednesday, December 2 and hosted their Winter Classic in Erie Hall this past weekend. The women played their first non tournament game of the season this past Wednesday against Washington and Jefferson which saw the undermanned Lions come away with a convincing 71-57 win. Junior guard Carrie Nestor led three other Lions in double-figures with 18 points while pulling down five rebounds and dishing off two assists. Erin Phillips scored 16 points on 6 for 12 shooting and a perfect 4 for 4 from the line. As a team, Behrend shot 43% from the field and 65% from the free-throw line. Washington and Jefferson couldn’t get their offense going as they only shot 34% from the field. The Lions then took their 2-1 record into their Winter Classic held in Erie Hall on December 4 and 5, where they took third place. Behrend faced off with Grove City in the opening round of the tournament. The Behrend women struggled shooting in the first half, going 7 for 27 from the field as Grove City jumped to an early lead. However, strong free throw shooting from the Lions and a half court desperation shot by Nestor at the buzzer kept the Lady Lions in the game. Behrend trailed only by three, 30-27, at the half. Washington and Jefferson 57 16 14 12 The Lions kept up the intensity in the second half behind the strong inside play of Phillips and Jen O’Lare who finished with 13 and 15 points, respectively. However, Grove City was able to hit big shots down the stretch by Jackie Becker and Karin Hendrickson, who combined for 30 points, to give Grove City the 61-54 win. Behrend would then face Albright in the consolation game on Saturday after Albright bowed out to Wilmington in the 6:00 game on Friday night. The game would have Behrend head coach Roz Fornari coach her former player and now Albright head coach Anne Bonner. Fornari’s Lions trailed at the half despite shooting 52% from the field. Albright applied strong pressure to the Lions throughout the game, forcing 30 Behrend turnovers. Albright led at the half, 38-34. Bonner’s group only shot 20% from the field in tne second half as the Lions continued their strong shooting, going 10 for 22 in the second half. Behrend outscored Albright 33-25 in the second half to give them the third place finish. Nestor again led the Lions with 20 points as Phillips and O’Lare continued to spark the women down low with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Phillips was named to the All-Tournament team as she combined for 29 points, 22 rebounds, five blocks and four steals on the weekend. The win moved the Lions to 3-2 on the year. The next game for the Behrend women will be at Thiel College on December 10 and will host Bethany College at 7:00 p.m. on December 12. Over the Christmas break, the Lady Lions will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the Sun Desert Classic on December 21-22. Blocks: 1, TO: Men’s basketball shooting road trip By Matt Buser staff writer The Penn State Behrend men’s basketball team continued to impress during this young season with a 71- 64 victory at Elmira this past Friday and a 61-56 win over Fredonia this past Tuesday. The men improved to 5-1 with the wins. Terrific team shooting and outstanding performances from guard Jason Paloskey and center Chris Hughes played major roles in the Lions’ victory over Elmira. Paloskey finished with 23 points on 10/11 shooting, including 3/4 from beyond the arc. Hughes finished with 20 points on 6/10 shooting, including 8/10 from the foul line. As a team. Behrend shot 52‘7c (24/46) overall, 449 c (4/9) from 3-point range, and converted 19 of 27 (707< ) free throws. “We were able to get the ball inside, and that created opportunities at the foul line," Behrend Coach Dave Niland commented. Center Nate Willson led the team with 5 assists, and forward Andy Lawrence paced the defense with 5 steals. The Behrend men then travelled to Fredonia which saw the Lions struggle to a five point win. Paloskey finished the game with only two points as Bovaird picked up the slack. Bovaird scored 14 points for the Lions and hit 5 of 6 from the foul line. Behrend was also saved by the strong free throw shooting and convincing edge on the boards. The Lions shot 18-2.3 from the line and outrebounded Fredonia, 46-34. Hughes and Lawrence contributed with 11 and 10 points, respectively as Lawrence also pulled down 11 boards. The win put the Lions atop the AMCC standings at 5-1 in non-conference names Behrend travels to Rochester for the RIT Brodie Classic this Friday and Saturday. The team has three weeks over Christmas break where they play no games. The next home game is on Tuesday.
