They will host their an nual Holiday Auction Tuesday, Dec. 1 in the Reed Union Build ing. Doors open for viewing at 6 p.m., and auctioneer Clark Johnson will open the bidding at 7 p.m. “We hold the auction each year to support the programs and activities of students involved in Protestant campus ministry," said Kelly Shrout, coordinator of Prot estant Campus Ministry. Proceeds from the event support ministry services for students, including worship, devotionals, books, and visiting speakers. More than 80 items have been donated for the auction by a variety of Erie mer chants including Conway and O’Malley, Stan’s Garden Center, Hearthside Framing Gallery, Kraus Electric, Barad Lighting Company, Carpetworld, Merle Norman Cosmetics, Diamond Men’s Store, and Barnes and Noble. YMCA memberships and tickets from the Erie Playhouse and the Erie Otters are up for bid ding, as well as meals from Coun try Cookin’, Spinner McGee's, and the Riverside Inn. What did the wise men actually see in the sky over Bethlehem two thousand years ago? Dr. Roger Knacke, director of the School of Science at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will discuss theories of the star of Bethlehem on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Otto Behrend Science Building. His lecture, which is free and open to the public, con tinues the College's 1998-99 Open House Nights in Astronomy Se ries. His pre sentation will consider whether the star of Bethlehem may have actu ally been a comet, a meteor, an ex ploding star, or a gathering of plan ets. Knacke will examine the star's description in the Bible and cor relate it with astronomical evi dence to suggest plausible expla nations for what the star might have been. Computer simulations of the sky over Bethlehem at the time of the birth of Jesus will be included. The level of Knacke's lecture is suitable for both children and adults. Distinguished Author Tim O’Brien will read from his se lected works at Penn State Erie The Behrend College, on Thurs day, December 3 at 7:00p.m. in the Reed Lecture Hall. His appear ance, which is free and open to the public , continues the Creative Writers Speakers Series. O’Brien’s visit to Behrend coin cides with the publication of his new novel, Tomcat in Love. A pre vious work, In the Lake of the Woods, was selected for honors by the New York Times Book Review and Time magazine, and received the 1995 Cooper Prize for Histori cal Fiction from the Society of American Historians. O’Brien had been praised for the “sheer brilliance” of his technique and called one of the best living American writers. Bond who has been an active participant in the movements for civil rights, eco nomic justice, and peace since the 1960’5, is currently a Distin guished Scholar in Residence at the American University in Wash ington D.C. and a member of the history faculty at the University of Virginia. Bond served four terms on the NAACP national board and in 1998 was elected its chairman. A collection of his essays has been published as A Time to Speak, A Time to Act. He is the author of Black Candidates: Southern Cam paign Experiences , and has writ ten for numerous periodical pub lications.
