Lady Lions soccer
captures AMCC crown

The Penn Stale Behrend
women's soccer team hosted and
won their Allegheny Mountain
Collegiate Conference tournament
this past weekend. Behrend de
feated Lake Erie 2-0 in semifinal
action on Saturday and won 2-1
against Laßoche in the final on
Sundav.
Saturday's 2-0 win against Lake
Erie did not come easily. “Lake
Erie is a tough team to play." as
sistant coach Melissa Eging said of
their opponent. “They play an un
orthodox style that resulted in us
drawing 15 offside penalties."

Women’s volleyball set for
conference championship

On October 28th, the Behrend
women's volleyball team treated an
enthusiastic crowd to a five game
victory over Laßoche College in
Erie Hall. The Lions had lost to La
Roche in a previous match on Sep
tember 24th hut came out fired up
to beat their conference rival.
Behrend came out strong with pre
cise passing and accurate sets that
brought the crowd to their feet.
Despite losing two of the five games
due to small mistakes that were very
crucial to the outcome, the Lions

Sunday's championship game against
Laßoche was a very dramatic 2-1 win.
Both teams failed to convert penalty
kicks, and both teams scored "own
goals," goals scored in their own net.

Laßoeca off a nice feed from Laura
Ferko. Assistant coach Eging com
mented on the win and the tournament.
"We expected to face frostburg. but
whoever we faced, our expectation was
to win. We knew going in to the week
end that to get in the regional tourna
ment we had to w in our conference tour-
nament
The Behrend team's impressive 15-2-
5 season was recognized with a #3 seed
in the 1998 Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) Division 111 Mid-
Atlantic Women's Soccer Champion
were able to increase their intensity
as the night went on because of the
importance of the match to the
AMCC standings.
Behrend finished up the five games
with a victory. The win had special
importance for senior Angela Traister
who played her final home game of
her three vear career for the Lions.
Being senior recognition night,
Traister was applauded for her out
standing skills over the past three
seasons
On Halloween night, while most
were trick or treating, the Behrend
Lions treated Pitt-Greenshurg to a
three to two loss in Behrend's last

Allentown, Pennsylvania. The women
will face #2 seeded Franklin &
Marshall on Saturday at 11:()(). Host
and #1 seed Muhlenberg plays against
Behrend conference rival Frostburg, the
#4 seed in the other semifinal game.
The championship game will be played
Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The All-AMCC Women's Soccer
Team was announced Monday and Be
hrend led the way with four members,
the most in the conference. Players
honored were midfielder Katie Giles,
delenders Michelle Finch and Jill
Yamma, and forward Jen Bargihand.
Also honored were goalie Michelle
Malatesta, who was also named AMCC
Co-Newcomer of the Year, and
midfielder Laura Ferko, named AMCC
Co-Most Valuable Player.

games before Behrend was victorious.
This was a much slower paced match
that saw the Lions struggling at times
with their serves. Pitt-Greensburg
had changed their offense and caught
Behrend by surprise. The Lions’ hit
ting wasn’t as effective at the start of
the match, but they were able to ad
just their defense which allowed the
game to pick up. Adjusting to the new
strategies of Pitt-Greensburg was the
key for Behrend's suceess.
On November 6-7, Behrend travels
to Frostburg State to compete for their
standing in the AMCC Tournament.

The AMCC women’s tennis champions: The Behrend Lions

Jill Yamma, a junior defender, has been named the Housing and Food Service Athlete o
the Week. Yamma helped lead the Behrend Lions to a 3-0 week and the AMCC conference
tournament championship.
“Jill played solid. She anchored the defense with her strong physical presence,” said
assistant coach Melissa Eging. “She also created a lot of scoring opportunities for her team
mates,” Eging added.
Penn State Behrend defeated Buffalo State 3-1 on Wednesday and then beat AMCC foe:
Lake Erie, 2-0, and Laßoche, 2-1, to win the conference tournament. Behrend finished the
regular season with a school record ot Fifteen wins and the best winning percentage in the
women’s soccer program's history.
Yamma is a graduate of McDowell High School.
