Men and women fight for the title
in the Battle of the Sexes

On ( Ictober 24th, Four male teams
and tour female teams competed on
the Behrend Carnival Ground in front
ol Reed to decide who was the better
sex. The competition consisted of
three rounds, and it was a fight to the
finish.
The first round was made up of five
different events. The males domi
nated the "Ho Ho Roll," an event that
consisted of rolling a Ho Ho on the
ground with their nose to the next
team member in line. The females
came from behind to catch up to their
male counterparts in the "Pencil
Pass." The "Pencil Pass" was a game
that involved pulling a pencil on a
string through every article of cloth
ing that each teammate was wearing
and then taking the pencil back out
again. After all five first round events,
both sexes were tied, and tension was
high.
Matchbox Players hold costume sale

Now that the weather is getting
cold, midterms are over, and if you
are lucky you can see a pumpkin on
the front stoop driving down Station
Road, it is time to think about Hal
loween; specifically, Halloween cos
tume ideas.
Being that fright night is on a Sat
urday this year no one has any excuse
not to get dressed up for Halloween.
And just to make sure that everyone
has an opportunity to get festive this
year, the Malhchbox Players
(Behrend's theatre group) is holding
a costume sale in the studio theatre

Going into the second round of
competition with only three male
teams and three female teams remain
ing, the competition was intense. The
ladies went cra/.y in the three-legged
race, and the men held their ground
during a wild game of "Sock Tag."
"Sock Tag" is where one blindfolded
team member is trying to throw socks
at another blindfolded person from
another team while not getting hit by
a sock. Another person from the team
helps out the blindfolded member by
being a navigator.
The second round of competition
came down to the "Chubby Bunny"
competition. In this wacky challenge
of marshmallow face stuffing, two
teams remained. They were the male
team a.k.a. The Babe Magnets and the
Alpha Sigma Alpha female team.
In the third and final round of com
petition, the two remaining teams
competed in Family Feud. Each team
gave their all in this tough competi
tion of quick thinking and risk-taking
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this
week prior to Halloween.
This everything must go sale con
sists of all the costumes used from
previous productions here at Behrend
that would most definitely accentuate
any costume idea for only some of
your precious pocket-change. More
important, for everyone's entertain
ment, proceeds are going to help the
Matchbox Players fund a musical later
in the year.
Just to make sure that every student
has an opportunity to browse, the sale
will begin on Wednesday. October
28th, at noon and last until 5:00 PM.

but, in the end the SURVEY SAYS
the males won. In response to this
outcome, Chris Lightner. 003 Busi
ness and Finance, stated, “As ex
pected the men won, and will rein as
champions for years to come." Jen
Zimmerman, 03 English, had another
opinion on the matter. She said "It
was very competitive but, the girls
should have won." Overall, both
sexes benefited from this fun com
petition.
Cecilia Casado, 01 Accounting,
said about the Battle of the Sexes, "I
thought it was a really cool competi
tion and, it was exciting to see how
the male and female teams worked
together in order to win for their sex."
The Communications Club spon
sored The Battle of the Sexes and
would like to thank everyone who
participated and helped with this
worthwhile Homecoming event.
Special congratulations to the "Babe
Magnets" for being the overall vic
tors at the end of the day.
7:00 to 9:00 P.M. On Thursday the
29th, the sale will continue from
11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. and again
from 8:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. The
sale will end with one scary midnight
madness sale (tremendous mark
downs) on Friday, October 30th, from
9:00 P.M. until midnight (for every
one with last minute party invita
tions).
In other words, to guarantee a great
time this October 31st, come in out
of the cold and check it out Wednes
day, Thursday, and Friday before Hal
loween. The hours will be posted
again outside of the studio door, so
stop in between classes.

1000 French: Good
coffee and good food

The name is as unique as the estab
lishment itself, which is actually a
coffee house moonlighting as a res
taurant. When I first visited 1000
French (which just opened its doors
in May, and is located on the corner
of Tenth and French Streets). I wasn’t
sure what a mesquite grill was doing
on the patio of an upscale coffee
house. However, I was soon to dis
cover that this was more than just a
coffee house. With a very small but
solid dinner menu, and a more exten
sive lunch menu. 1000 French had
managed to magically turn itself into
a nice restaurant.
As I entered the restaurant, I was
instantly impressed with the atmo
sphere, the bar itself was beautiful but
not as beautiful as the many antiques,
the art hanging on the wall, and the
lighting which was inspiring. Throw
all this together with some mellow

jazz in the background and you can’t
help but love the place. My roommate
and I showed up at 8:30 and we just
caught the restaurant as it was clos
ing. Maybe that can excuse the ser
vice, a little, but it was seat yourself,
and our waitress left before we had
finished our entrees. Now this may
seem unfortunate, but I’m sure it was
for the best because after she left, the
owner finished the table and the ser
vice was instantly better.
For starters the French onion soup
is passable, but please let me recom
mend the baked brie instead. It was
superb, served with a honey raspberry
sauce and pecans. It may have been
the best I’ve had anywhere around the
Erie area. The first thing that may
have lessened my enthusiasm was that
every time I took a drink of water I
remarked on how this restaurant could
benefit from a water filter.
The delmonico steak that my room
mate had was excellent. Smoked on
the barbecue to a perfect medium and

marinated in a secret sauce; each bite
was a culinary success. I had the
pesto chicken and wasn’t very im
pressed. The blend of the mesquite
flavor of grilled chicken and the fla
vor of the pesto was interesting and
not disagreeable, but the chicken was
dry and I wished I had ordered the
steak. Dessert was very good, but I
expected nothing less from a coffee
house. I had the raspberry cheese
cake, and my roommate had the
chocolate tart. Both are equallv
worth ordering.
All in all 1000 French is a restau
rant worth going to. If you don’t find
something on the dinner menu which
excites your palate, they will be
happy to serve you something from
their larger lunch menu. Even if you
just want to enjoy a great atmosphere,
by all means go, have a cup of cof
fee. By the way, they make a great
cup o’ coffee.
