Voter registration deadline approaching

About twenty years ago, the Su
preme Court decided that college stu
dents could register to vote in the dis
trict where they attend college. With
the deadline for voter registration rap
idly approaching, it is important that
students who wish to vote in this elec
tion register immediately.
Since college students spend most
of the year living on or near their col
lege campus, many want to vote in
that district rather than in their home
towns. One reason is convenience.

Although he has not registered to vote
yet, he is planning on registering in
Erie. “It is a lot less trouble than go
ing home, “he commented.”
Students may vote in their home
town by absentee ballot instead of
traveling home on election day. How

is arrested for a crime while at school,
she or he will he tried in the court that

in, not in their hometown. Because
district judges are elected, students
might find it more effective to choose
the judge in their college town than in
their hometown.

haven’t thought about it that way. I
guess I should,” he said in regard to
choosing a district judge.

In addition to choosing a local
judge, other local officials make
choices about zoning and other ordi
nances that could affect students.
Zoning is a particularly important is
sue to Behrend because ot the pro
posed development around Station
Road. The area is currently zoned
for college related buildings and busi
nesses, but as the development be
comes more prominent, local resi
dents may resist the changes. The
elected officials in Harborcreek will
be the ones to make the final deci-
sions about zoning.
Election Day is Tuesday, Novem
ber 3, and the final day to register in
Pennsylvania is Monday, October 5.

ASA has been working on this pro
gram for two years now and each year
it becomes a bigger and bigger event.

09/26/98 Found a male sleeping under a truck in parking Lot F. The male was charged with
underage drinking.
09/26/98 Individual complained of receiving modem calls on the emergency phone line,
