Director
and Social Sciences resigns

This past Friday, the Director of
the School of Humanities and So
cial Sciences, Dr. Roberta Salper,
suddenly resigned her office. On
September 4, Provost and Dean John
Lilley sent a memo out to all of the
professors and administrators stat
ing that Dr. Salper had resigned as
the Director of the School of Hu
manities and Social Sciences on
September 3. Her resignation takes
effect on June 30, 1999. Until June
30, Dr. Salper is on administrative
leave. She does retain full profes
sorship however, which means she
has the option to return to Behrend
in a teaching position.
Dean Lilley also met with the
staff, full professors, and in-charge
people in the School of Humanities
and Social Sciences to make them
aware of the situation. Dean Lilley

Man survives Gorge fall

Thursday afternoon, fire trucks,
ambulances, and a Life Star helicop
ter arrived at Behrend in response to
a report that someone had fallen into
the Wintergreen Gorge. Thomas
Quinlan, 23, of Wickliffe, Ohio, was
hiking in the Gorge with two friends
when he wandered off from the group
and fell into the ravine in an area
known as the "Devil's Backbone."
Quinlan was not a Behrend student.
According to Bill Donahue, Direc
tor of Police and Safety Services, the
Police and Safety office was the first
to be notified by one of the victim's
friends, but the caller could not give
an accurate description of where the
victim was. Officers from Police and
Safety were sent to different parts of
the Gorge to locate Quinlan. "We also
notified emergency response. We
wanted to get them to the scene as

was found. It took about 45 minutes
for EMTs to carry him out of the
Gorge, as they had to hike about 3/4
miles to the H Lot where ambulances
were waiting. From there, he was
taken to a Life Star helicopter, which
had landed on the Ski Slope, and was
transported to Hamot Medical Cen
ter.

Sources close to the situation have
stated that Dr. Salper was not al
lowed into her office Friday morn
ing. Dean Lilley stated, "It is a mat
ter of policy not to comment on per
sonnel decisions." Dr. Salper also
preferred not to comment at this
time.
"They did an exceptional job in get
ting this young man out of the Gorge.
They were very professional."
Brookville and Belle Valley were two
of the departments that responded. "It
was a really strong effort on
everybody's part," added Donahue.
The "Devil's Backbone" is an area
of high cliffs located near Almy Hall.
The area is just off of Behrend prop
erty.
Tara Casey, 05 Accounting, and
Chris Maguire, 05 Accounting, were
in the area when the rescue was tak
ing place. "We saw them bring him
up on the stretcher," statcd Maguire,
"I thought he was dead." "He was
really white and pale," commented
Casey, "We could see he was breath
ing, and we saw him lift his head."
Quinlan is still listed in serious con
dition at Hamot, according to

SGA discusses
parking problems

Do you have a car ? If so you prob
ably know how difficult it is to find
a parking space on campus. Quite
often it seems that the number of reg
istered vehicles outnumbers the
amount of available spaces.
Parking was one of the major is
sues addressed during this week's
meeting of the Student Government
Association. The increased rates for
the parking permits and the unavail
ability of spaces has drawn much
concern from students. Last year's
permits were $95 and this year the
fee has increased by twenty dollars,
raising the price of this year's per
mit to $ll5. The increase is due to
the construction of additional spaces.
Although many students are greatly
unsatisfied with the current state of
parking on campus, many have not
voiced their opinions to administra
tors and SGA.

the two available freshman seats on
Student Government must submit
their petitions by 5 p.m. Monday,
September 14, in the SGA suite.
There is also a vacant seat available
for any student above second semes
ter status; these petitions are also due
Monday, September 14. Organiza
tions wishing to submit supplemen
tal budget requests must submit them
by Wednesday, September 16.
