relevant to practicing business profes

and 3.) Providing outreach services
to the business community through
applied research, internships, consult

Ken Miller, Dean of Student Affairs
1. Describe your job.
"My main job responsibility is to
serve as an advocate for students. I
thinks it's important for the dean of
students to understand what concerns
students have and involve them in the
solutions. I have overall responsibil
ity for Student Affairs, an administra
tive unit of the College impacts stu
dents on a daily basis. Student Af
fairs is comprised of the Career De
velopment Center, Child Care Center,
Educational Equity Programs, I lealth
and Wellness Center, Intramurals,
Personal Counseling, Residence Life,
RUB Desk, and Student Activities (in
cluding Greek life and service learn
ing initiatives).
2. What are some of the activities
you suggest first-year students
should get involved with?
It's important that first-year stu
dents find their niche at Behrend.
There are over 80 clubs and organi
zations in which students can get in
volved, virtually something for every
one! Also, I always urge first-year
students to participate fully in New
Student Orientation. It's a great way
to meet other students and members
of the faculty and staff. Orientation
also provides a great deal of impor
tant information regarding academic
programs, course scheduling, etc.

a. Treat your college education
as a full-time job. A 15-18 credit hour
schedule may require 45-55 hours per
week devoted to your studies (includ
ing the time you spend in class.
b. Visit the career development
and placement center and learn about
majors and career opportunities. Hav

to your success.
c. Become involved in some
kind of campus club or organization.
Employers are looking for individu

Resident students should be active
participants in their residence halls.
Residence I ,ife and Joint Residence
Council have worked together to es
tablish hall Councils in each of the
buildings. Hall Council is a great way
for students to meet other residence
of their building and get involved in
social programs. It also serves as a
great communication tool with Hous
ing and Food Services, Residence
Life, and other offices regarding stu
dent issues.
Commuting students need to resist
the urge to come to campus for class
and then leave. Commuter Council
is an excellent organization in which
to get involved. It also provides so
cial opportunities for students and
helps address the needs of commuter
students on campus.
Regardless of whether a student
lives on campus or commutes, he or
she can get involved in the Student
Government Association. SGA is the
governing body for students and has
a great deal of impact regarding is
sues on campus.

The school of business is offering
a new marketing major. We are de
veloping a finance major and inter
national business majors. We arc also
developing a first year seminar that
will introduce freshman to the vari

ated career opportunities.
4. What advice would you give first

Perhaps the above could he listed

series of mini-concerts featuring
many of the region's top bands, and a

We've expanded services in many
key areas including the addition of

of jobs and internship opportunities
such as a canoe trip provided through
intramurals and Recreational Sports.
We've also added two key staff posi

(her name is Alison Parr-Plasha) and
a Greek Life/Service Learning coor

4. What advice would you have for
first-year students?
Become a part of Penn State Be
hrend. There are many opportunities
to get involved through programs,
activities, clubs, and organizations.
You can't do everything but do some
thing!
I'd also advise students to be them
selves. There is a great deal of peer
pressure on college campuses and stu
dents sometimes find themselves in
awkward or uncomfortable situations.
Listen to your intuition, if it doesn't
seem right to you don't do it!

I best describe my job in one word

Managing student activities is very
difficult to describe... it includes the
supervision of staff and students, pro

support for student leaders and stu

Greek system, budget oversight and
a variety of other programs which
enhance the educational and social en
vironment at Penn State Behrend. As

I build my work upon.

Technically I'm the coordinator of
the I lonors and Scholars program at
Behrend. Basically I keep an eye on
what's going on (what forms have
been completed, what courses are be

make the program better.

the students' overall educational ex

Many opportunities await our stu

should not be afraid to take a risk and
attend a meeting or an event. Our stu

happy to involve new students in the
many activities, organizations and
events which make Penn State Be

It is the College's 50th Anniversary
and I look forward to the many new
events associated with this occasion.
New Penn State Behrend Spirit Days

I haven't been doing it long enough
to know. It's all new to me. I used to

4. What advice would you give first
year students?
I would ask new students to think of
themselves as having unlimited capa
bilities as they approach this new
challenge. Penn State Behrend rep
resents a new beginning and with that
new starting point comes the ability
to define who you would like to be
now, and in the future. Learn to em
brace change. My experience tells me
that one of the only things that you
can expect in life is that many things
continually change. Much of one's
happiness in life is directly related to
how well you adjust to changes in
your life. If it feels like things are
getting tough, ask for help. That's
what we're here f0r....
look at it from a different perspective
because I taught honors courses and
have had students within the program
but now I look at it in a way that en
compasses the entire program.
4. What advice would you give first

Don't worry/plan too far in the fu
