Providing high quality educa tion with an applied orientation. 2.) Conduct high quality research that is relevant to practicing business profes sionals and makes our faculty more knowledgeable of business practices and 3.) Providing outreach services to the business community through applied research, internships, consult ing and training programs. 2. What are some activities you sug gest first year students should get Ken Miller, Dean of Student Affairs 1. Describe your job. "My main job responsibility is to serve as an advocate for students. I thinks it's important for the dean of students to understand what concerns students have and involve them in the solutions. I have overall responsibil ity for Student Affairs, an administra tive unit of the College impacts stu dents on a daily basis. Student Af fairs is comprised of the Career De velopment Center, Child Care Center, Educational Equity Programs, I lealth and Wellness Center, Intramurals, Personal Counseling, Residence Life, RUB Desk, and Student Activities (in cluding Greek life and service learn ing initiatives). 2. What are some of the activities you suggest first-year students should get involved with? It's important that first-year stu dents find their niche at Behrend. There are over 80 clubs and organi zations in which students can get in volved, virtually something for every one! Also, I always urge first-year students to participate fully in New Student Orientation. It's a great way to meet other students and members of the faculty and staff. A 15-18 credit hour schedule may require 45-55 hours per week devoted to your studies (includ ing the time you spend in class. b. Visit the career development and placement center and learn about majors and career opportunities. Hav ing a focus can make a big difference to your success. c. Become involved in some kind of campus club or organization. Employers are looking for individu als with leadership experience in ad dition to good grades. ;~ ~ Resident students should be active participants in their residence halls. Residence I ,ife and Joint Residence Council have worked together to es tablish hall Councils in each of the buildings. Hall Council is a great way for students to meet other residence of their building and get involved in social programs. It also serves as a great communication tool with Hous ing and Food Services, Residence Life, and other offices regarding stu dent issues. Commuting students need to resist the urge to come to campus for class and then leave. Commuter Council is an excellent organization in which to get involved. It also provides so cial opportunities for students and helps address the needs of commuter students on campus. Regardless of whether a student lives on campus or commutes, he or she can get involved in the Student Government Association. SGA is the governing body for students and has a great deal of impact regarding is sues on campus. 3. What new or exciting things are happening in your department this semester? The school of business is offering a new marketing major. We are de veloping a finance major and inter national business majors. We arc also developing a first year seminar that will introduce freshman to the vari ous disciplines business and associ ated career opportunities. 4. What advice would you give first year students? Perhaps the above could he listed as advice College's 50th Anniversary Celebra tion to be held august 28th- 30th. a series of mini-concerts featuring many of the region's top bands, and a series of tailgate parties beginning September 19th featuring men's and women's varsity soccer. We've expanded services in many key areas including the addition of College Central , an online database of jobs and internship opportunities such as a canoe trip provided through intramurals and Recreational Sports. We've also added two key staff posi tions: a second personal counselor (her name is Alison Parr-Plasha) and a Greek Life/Service Learning coor dinator. 4. What advice would you have for first-year students? Become a part of Penn State Be hrend. There are many opportunities to get involved through programs, activities, clubs, and organizations. You can't do everything but do some thing! I'd also advise students to be them selves. There is a great deal of peer pressure on college campuses and stu dents sometimes find themselves in awkward or uncomfortable situations. Listen to your intuition, if it doesn't seem right to you don't do it! I,l`C, Chris Rizzo, Director of Student Activities 1 Describe your, job I best describe my job in one word - eclectic Managing student activities is very difficult to describe... it includes the supervision of staff and students, pro gram development for the College, support for student leaders and stu dent organizations including the Greek system, budget oversight and a variety of other programs which enhance the educational and social en vironment at Penn State Behrend. As an example. I may play hest to an in ternationally known speaker one day. work with a group of students on a service project in a homeless shelter the next day, then assist a student or ganization with a rock concert the fol lowing day. I le xibilitv and problem solving are some of the keystones that I build my work upon. 2. What are some activities you suggest first-year students should get involved with? I suggest that they get involved and John Gamble, Director of the Honors and Scholars Pro 1. Describe your job. Technically I'm the coordinator of the I lonors and Scholars program at Behrend. Basically I keep an eye on what's going on (what forms have been completed, what courses are be ing offered) I hope in the future to he able to make suggestions on how to make the program better. 2. What are some activities you sug gest first year students should get August September October November December stay involved in out-of-class activi ties. Balanced involvement enhances the students' overall educational ex perience. Students should look around, get up, and do something! Many opportunities await our stu dents and not every activity or orga nization is for everyone but they should not be afraid to take a risk and attend a meeting or an event. Our stu dents, faculty and staff are more than happy to involve new students in the many activities, organizations and events which make Penn State Be hrend such a special community. 3. What new or exciting things are happening in your department this summer? It is the College's 50th Anniversary and I look forward to the many new events associated with this occasion. New Penn State Behrend Spirit Days and a series of Rock/Pop concerts on campus this year will really shake things up. I think that many of the lecturers included in the Speaker Sc- involved with? The most important thing is to strike a balance between some co-cur ricular activities and not doing too much. Don't lose sight of the fact that you're here to be in the classroom. 3. Is there anything new or excit ing going on in your department this semester? I haven't been doing it long enough to know. It's all new to me. The Student Program ming Council has developed a great line up of movies and Bruno's events on the weekends. 4. What advice would you give first year students? I would ask new students to think of themselves as having unlimited capa bilities as they approach this new challenge. Penn State Behrend rep resents a new beginning and with that new starting point comes the ability to define who you would like to be now, and in the future. Learn to em brace change. My experience tells me that one of the only things that you can expect in life is that many things continually change. Much of one's happiness in life is directly related to how well you adjust to changes in your life. If it feels like things are getting tough, ask for help. That's what we're here f0r.... look at it from a different perspective because I taught honors courses and have had students within the program but now I look at it in a way that en compasses the entire program. 4.
