This comet is the source of the annual Leonid Meteor Shower with a period of 33 years. Also, during the day on February 26, a special filter will be fitted on the Newtonian telescope in the observa tory, behind the Science Building, to observe the partial solar eclipse. Those participating in the Thirty-Hour Famine, which is sponsored by the Penn State-Behrend Newman Association, will join thou sands around the world in an effort coordinated by World Vision, a Chris tian relief and development organi zation with over 5,200 projects in one hundred nations. Participants are ask ing friends and family to sponsor them as they fast to identify with the own transportation are welcome to sign up for one hour Monday through Thursday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. or 12:30-2:30 p.m. No prior experience is necessary and all majors are wel come. In 1997 more than 300,000 young people raised $4 million to fight poverty around the world. Last year Penn State-Behrend students raised $1,500, and this year they hope to raise more. "This is a great way for all of us to do something about the problem of hunger around the world," said Scott Sloka, a senior management information systems major from Canonsburg. Senior biology major Sandra Stanko Mishic of Kane has been awarded the Council of Fellows Undergraduate Student Research Award for 1998 at Penn State Erie, The Behrend Col lege. Working under the direction of Dr. Pam Botts, assistant professor of biology, Mishic has conducted sev eral projects related to freshwater ecology. Much of her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and has received recog nition from fellow researchers.
