Thursday, February 12, 1998 Lions roar to 9th straight victory Men's basketball team improves record to 15-5 while moving AMCC record to 6-1 by Dylan Stewart sports editor The Lions couldn't be feeling much better about themselves at this point in their season, as they have been unstoppable as of late, reeling off nine straight wins, while extending their over all record to 15 - 5. They have also found themselves in second place in the AMCC standings at 6 - I, only one game behind league leading Pitt - Bradford (6 - 0). Even though the Lions have enjoyed great suc cess in the last few weeks, head coach Dave Niland remains modest, trying not to let the re cent success change the team focus. "The only thing we look ahead to is the next practice," commented Niland after the Grove City win. Whatever the Lions have been doing in prac tice seems to be working, as they continue to take one win at a time "We have just been working hard in practice every day and letting it carry over into the games," said sophomore John Parks. Last night against Grove City, the Lions held off a late charge by the visitors, as they used tough defense and steady offensive execution, to hang on for the win by a score of 69 - 53. "It was a good win over a good team," said "The only thing we look ahead to is the next practice" Ni land "It was a good battle, and we just made plays down the stretch to win the game," added jun ior Brian Emick. The Lions shot a solid 48% from the field (22 - 46), while also shooting an impressive 90% from the free- throw line (18 -20). Leading the scoring for the Lions were both Brock Bovaird and Ashley Orris, with 18 and 16 points apiece. Brian Emick had a big game, as he knocked in 13 points, while pulling down a team- high 13 rebounds. Also contributing big in the win were Jason Paloskey with 14 points, and Nate Wilson with 7 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Earlier in the week on the 4th, the Lions trav eled down to Laßoche, where they came away with a big 60 - 54 victory. Ashley Orris led the way with 17 points and 5 rebounds, while Jason Paloskey and Brian Emick had 13 and 12 points respectively. Brock Bovaird added 10 points and 6 assists, as Nate Willson pulled down a team high 10 rebounds. The Lions will next look to extend their win ning steak to ten games when they travel to Allegheny on 14th, for a 3:00 p.m. contest. The Lions will next be at home when they host Lake Erie on the 18th, at 8:00 p.m. Willson Penn State - Behrend basketball center Nate Willson is this week's Housing and Food Services Athlete of the Week. Willson used his outstanding re bounding skills to help lead Behrend to both of their wins this week, as the team extended their winning streak to nine games. Nate pulled down a total of 17 re bounds in the two games this week, to lead the team rebounding depart ment for the Lions. "N squared (as his teammates call him), is an animal on the boards," said senior Steve Hout. "Nate is one of the big emotional leaders of our team," said junior "Nate is one of the big emotional lead- ers of our team" Brian Emick Willson's play has been an integral part of Behrend's success this sea son. The Lions boast a 15 - 5 record thus far, while standing at second place in the AMCC at 6 - 1. Through 19 games this season, Willson is averaging 7.8 points per game, with a .565 shooting percent age. He is also pulling down an av erage of 6.2 rebounds per game. Nate credits the rest of the team for his success this season. "They're the ones that make it possible," he said of his teammates. Willson, a fourth semester MET major, is from Bradford, PA, where he attended Bradford High School. Among his hobbies, he lists talk ing to his girlfriend long distance, collecting zippo lighters and Moun tain Dew final four caps, while riot forgetting to mention basketball.
