page 2 - The Behrend College Collegian. Thursday, January 22, 1998 Advising award nominations sought by Dylan Stewart chin flier The nominations for this year's Guy W. Wilson Award for Excellence in Academic Advising will need to he submitted to the Office of the Provost and Dean by Monday, February 2. The Award has been given out to a faculty member every year since 1982. The purpose of this award is to encourage and reward excellence in advising by faculty members at Penn State-Behrend. It is important to note that students play a big role in which advisor wins this award. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that students par ticipate by submitting a nomination form. The nomination form is very brief and only requires a short para graph explaining why that faculty member should be nominated. The more specific the reasons for nomi nating an advisor, the better the chance that advisor has to win. It is asked that students be specific about why she or he feels that their advisor should receive this award. The winner of this contest is se lected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee, which is comprised of six faculty members and one student. However, the students' input is the largest factor in the committee's de cision of who will win. The committee will take the num ber of nominations turned in and the input they receive on the nominees as the deciding factors in selecting a r - - - Student Opinion Survey on campus commercial developement sponsored by the Student Government Association Are you concerned about food service prices? The advisor with the most nominations does not necessarily win. What is written on the form also plays a big part in the decision. The winner of this award will re ceive two things. A small amount of money a great recognition from the faculty and students. The recognition is thought to he more important than the money. "It's looked at by the faculty as a very nice achievement," said Cathy Mester, Senior Lecturer in Speech Communication. "I would really like to encourage students to participate or nominate," she added. James Kurre, Associate Professor of Economics, had similar thoughts on the matter, "This is a chance for the advisors to be rewarded for going the extra mile for the students. It's good recognition for the teachers." Advisors can play a large role a student's college career. A good ad visor is someone who will help in ac quiring information, short range se mester planning, and long range ca reer planning. A good advisor also takes the time to talk to their students. They can sort out the confusion of scheduling the right classes at the right time. Almost every student will have an academic advisor influence their college career. To honor an advisor that puts in extra effort, nomination forms can be picked up in the library, at the RUB desk and in the computer center in 131 Hammermill. Two new political groups on campus by Anne Rajotte managing editor Last week, the Student Government Association voted to approve two new campus organizations: College Democrats and College Republicans. Both of the organizations have existed in past years, but have not survived. Last semester, Ayodele Jones and Jeff Ragan both began the process of the reviving the defunct groups. "We have a strong starting point with a few key memebers who are interested in making College Democrats a strong campus group." Ayodele Jones President of College Democrats Ayodele Jones, a fourth semester political science major, is the presi dent of College Democrats. She said that she decided to restart the organi zation because there was a need for a political organization on campus. She also is committed to getting students involved in politics. Jones wants to, "stir student interest in politics. It doesn't have to be partisan, just get involved." SGA needs your opinion. News Her major plans for the College Democrats include, "going out into the community and working with lo cal Democratic leaders." The organi zation also plans to get involved with campaigns next fall, including the gu bernatorial race. In addition, they plan to register students to vote. The club is looking for members right now. Jones comments, "We have a strong starting point with a few key members who are interested in mak ing College Democrats a strong cam pus group." College Democrats will start meeting in February. Jeff Ragan, a second semester elec trical engineering major is the presi dent of College Republicans. He started College Republicans when he heard about a student from Grove City College who was trying to start Re publican groups at different universi ties. He wants to get more students involved and also gain personal ex perience. A big issue for College Republicans is registering people to vote. Ragan commented that, "a lot of young people don't vote, but most issues af fect them." He would like to get people more involved with Republi can issues and the Republican Party. He would also like the organization to follow local politics and local poli ticians. College Republicans is starting a membership drive next week and the first meeting will be held on Wednes day, February, 4. 7 .~ J Y or N 8.)
