It's more exciting there." 9/30/97 East Erie County Communications reported receiving harassing telephone calls on the P&S emergency line. DEEC works on diversity by Tammy Freeman sire writer The number of minority stu dents at Behrend is up from last year but down from 1994. Thanks to the recruitment ef forts of Behrend's Diversity and Education Equity Commit tee (DEEC), its mission re mains intact. The mission of the DEEC is to implement and evaluate strategies for recruiting a more diverse college population, as sess campus climate, promote an appreciation for differences, and insure equal access to pro grams and services by all mem bers of the college community. Heather Lerch, 03 Biology Dan Uncles, 03 Secondary Education -Karen Wasylson, 03 Chem Engineering Judd Hornstein, 01 Comp Sci Police And Safety There are four main commit tees in the DEEC. The campus climate committee promotes a healthy and safe environment for all students on campus. The recruitment committee has be gun a mail campaign to stu dents in Puerto Rico to increase minority enrollment. The reten tion committee's primary goal is to keep minority students at Behrend by offering programs that will help diversify stu dents. Finally, the equal access committee works to ensure that all students, regardless of color, receive the same opportunities. Despite the DEEC's efforts, four out of five students who ii i l t i, 1,v,0t ton. yaw . "Twag 14!" 898-6488 were surveyed on campus believe that minority groups are not vis ible on campus. A Trigon mem ber who wanted to remain anony mous feels that the attitude to wards homosexuals on campus is negative. This student also be lieves that many people are afraid to join Trigon because of what others might think of them. DEEC reaches out to Erie high schools and other groups in or der to recruit more students. Of minority students surveyed, none say that they have experi enced any type of discrimination on campus, or as one stated, "at least, not yet." News JOIN THE COLLEGIAN IN 1Fi.1.1 3.
