Israelis in Palestine by Jason Simmons Collegian Staff Guess what is going on in Israel? hat's right. The children of our orld are playing games again. his time the game takes place in the city of Hebron in the west bank territory. The Israeli government is reserving the right to allow the Israeli defense force to operate in the city of Hebron where Jews and Arabs live. The purpose of this liven by the Israeli government is o stop the threat of a terrorist ttack. Sounds reasonable. The Israeli government is also imiting the actions of the 'alestinian police by limiting their capons and places they may lama Vantage points overlooking e Jewish quarter of the city may of have unaccompanied Palestinian satrols. Sounds as if the Israeli government wants to protect the Jewish people, or arc there ulterior motives? If Hebron is being given to the Palestinians, then why is the Israeli y remaining? It is not a very ice thing to do, especially when a Chad's last good-bye by Chad Clouse Opinion Editor I once had a dream about Madonna. It had nothing to do with sex. I scream to her from a window. Paint on the frame chipped off on my hands and I could feel the shards digging into my skin. I called to her. She looked up at the window an turned away. I don't know why I called to her. The window belonged to an army barracks at Fort Indiantown Gap. She walked between the identical white barracks, built like row house in the poor neighborhoods. No glass blocked my way and I leaned far out into the opening. I looked down to the grown and saw a worn grass path. I don't remember waking up, but I had a sense that I was somewhere else. I opened my eyes. Madonna does not represent a sex object, but a goal to be achieved. I see Madonna as rich, famous, and above all, a strong character. I find that I can not at this point in my life have what she has. It is a bad idea to taunt an adversary because in the future that adversary may be more powerful than you. I believe Palestinians do have a point in hating Jews. The Zionists took Palestinian land, created a Jewish nation, and perhaps reinvented history. The Palestinians were ousted, as the Jews themselves were ousted centuries ago. One could argue that the Jews are giving land back to the Palestinians, but with a military presence remaining, one's adversary does not grow strong. Puppetry this is. The puppet's strings are yanked by a powerful puppeteer. If the puppeteer controls the puppet, then the puppet cannot control Itself. The Palestinians are a Pinnochio made out of wood, lacking life while the woodcarver is the one with the big nose (no stereotypes intended). I believe that the Israelis should remain in Israel, but outside of the Palestinian areas. You find the style and the feel you like, but you can't find the right color. In the dream I saw the path which she followed. It is a metaphorical path at best. I do not desire to follow in Madonna's footsteps. I don't even like Madonna. I must have been watching MTV that evening and it stuck in my mind. I have, as Opinion Editor tried to search for that perfect sweater, and found only a crappy yellow, a neo seventies throw hack. Worst of all, in polyester. The Opinion section of the paper is the least liked. I have an opinion poll from a communications class to prove it. The articles this year have not been spectacular. They have ranged from whining to campaign propaganda. I have tried to increase the diversity of my staff with a few successes. You may have seen a few new bylines in my section. I would like you all to know that I have tried to better the section, but found myself understaffed. The Jews have been gone from Israel for two thousand years not by choice. But with the vacuum left in the land, the Palestinians came in and resettled it. They did not steal Jewish land, so why should Israel steal their's? Israel still controls territories it won from war, which in itself is an argument that Israel can make in keeping its land. Israel was attacked the day it became a nation and won the land. Many Israelis fought hard to protect their home' and deserve one. However, th , victor has not been the bette player. The land is still in the control of Israel. The wars are over and Israel ha , not returned any land, with the exception of the Sinai Pcninsul . because Egypt made peace. Gaz. doesn't count. Israel taunts Gaza a it is taunting Hebron. By keeping troops in Hebron, Israel gets the power and the Palestinians get a tug on their puppet strings. The game is over, but a sore winner remains. I hope that those of you who are tired of the same opinion piece give a thought to writing for The Collegian. It is actually a fun process. To see your name in print is uplifting. I can think of nothing prophetic to say in this my last article. I have worked hard for the paper over the last two years. The voice I brought to the paper has been well recieved. I thank you all for your helpful comments. I tend to think that Behrend is a decent school, but with a few tui people. At night, lying in bed, I have throughout about blowing the place up more then once. I would know how mind you. Did you know that C-4 is a very stable explosive unless you heat it up. When its warm it becomes unstable. You drop, step on it, squeeze it too hard and you are out a there. Don't worry. I don't have any explosives, and I don't care for prison. I think it is just natural to be outwardly aggressive sometimes. To all the people out there that hate me, you can kiss my round shiny one. I have no tolerance for your stupidity. Don't worry, I never hold a grudge. It takes too much energy to hate someone. You have to spend hours every day hating them, and it gets a little monotonous. As for Erie, I hate this town and when I graduate you will never catch me back here. This has been the worst city I have ever lived in, and I have lived in a city where the buildings were hollowed out by artillery rounds. Dodging bullets is at least interesting, and good exercise. A lot of you know that I am a little bit off. I take it as my privilege for serving my country. And I didn't throw that desk all the way across the room. That story has gotten out of hand. It was one desk, and I just dropped it, kind of. For all the people who told me to seek psychiatric help, I haven't. Anyway, I have quit the newspaper staff. I am glad to be rid of the burden. I can't take long hours of news print any longer. Kiss, Kiss. No excuses by Matt Plizga Sports Editor It was opening night. Everyone in the dressing room was excited about stepping on stage to show their skills to a new crowd. We had practiced and rehearsed for this moment for months. Each one of us knew what our goal was and what we had to do to accomplish it. Finally it was time to make our first appearance in front of our crowd. I think we all expected to open the doors and see the stands packed with friends, family, and fans. Unfortunately we opened the doors and saw maybe 50 people scattered throughout the hall. When we saw this you could just hear the adrenaline release from each of us like air from an untied balloon. That had to be my biggest disappointment in college when I walked up the stairs of Erie Hall to play my first collegiate home game and saw the lack of support the community and student body provided for the team. Anyone who has ever played any competitive sport, participated in a musical, play, concert or any such activity knows how gratifying it is to step onto your stage and see a large crowd waiting to see you perform. If a large crowd didn't show you would know how disappointing and demoralizing it is. About 3,000 students attend Behrend. Seating capacity for Erie Hall is over 500, yet average attendance is about 150, including family and the other teams fans. As for outdoor sports seating is unlimited and fans have the unique f ; gpi}ryy gjy, b 0 Pool*Darts*Foosball Volleyball 4 h# Sand in ere, e ta ats Are: ' art te nts 2 EI4 I / 1 7 ee t StUde imimmimin JlAll Schools fronl 17 &Up 1111 Gann °ll .4 Party Here with vir Behrenu stud, t E.dulb oro VON CMe Mercy 0041 Out , Jot 0 i , 0 Or _____ 455-7647 Meet Our Student Staff I Danceciub Free r -1 I ADMIT ONE I L 21 AND OVER J Cover Fri Si Drinks AV4V2II S'IrCUOC.gRY J.V. This lack of support not only makes the players feel lethargic at times, it also makes Behrend look poor. Other teams come to Behrend (Eric Hall in particular) and laugh at its size, assuming that the talent on the team is just as pathetic as the fan support. When we can't even get support from our own student body, there is no way Behrend will ever receive any recognition for its accomplishments. While there arc many excuses for not supporting Behrend athletics, I have compiled some solutions. ssss (cost): Games in Erie Hall cost $l.OO for students, $2.00 non students and free if on a guest list Solution: Get to know a player and they can put you on the list so you can go to the game for free. Fox prime time: Have to watch Beverly llills 90210 and Melrose Place Solution: That's what the VCR was invented for--USE IT! HOMEWORK!!! Solution: Procrastination (it works) No good teams. BULL!- The women's basketball team won the ECAC tournament last year. The men's team had a winning record and have seven returning players, including three of the top scorers on last year's team. Both men's and women's soccer continue to improve each year breaking new records for wins in a season and challenging for post season positions. In the fall you can support the volt )all team and the cross 2 Clubs Curre nt Dole country team along with women's tennis. During the spring you have a wide variety of sports to choose from not only are the softball anti baseball teams always ;:ompetitive but you can also support men's tennis and the men's golf Warn that also had a tremendous fall season. What?? You don't like sports Solution: Come anyway so you can look at the cheerleaders in their short skirts or the players with their shorts hanging off their butts. No babysitter. Solution: For those people with families, you can bring your kids to the game. They may find that they enjoy watching sports and even develop a desire to play. If that occurs, I am sure they will learn the value of teamwork, hard work and experience the exhilaration of competitive athletics. It's Miller time: Cuts into beer drinking time. Solution: Start before game so you can come and heckle the other team. Now that 1 have refreshed your memory on how it feels to step on stage and see almost no crowd there to watch you perform, everyone should sympathize with members of Behrend athletics. You have heard testimony from a player who has experienced the disappointment for a full year. 1 have also offered solutions for common excuses not to attend the games. So next time there is a game, rather than going home to watch T.V. or drink some beer: Stop by Eric Hall, the baseball field or the soccer field to support the Bchrend athletic program.
