November: Movies, theater by Adria Kovaly Collegian Staff November is now upon us, and if you are looking for some fun ways to pass your time on those cold and dreary days, check out the suggestions listed below. There is nothing better than curling up on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn and escaping into a movie to make you forget the dropping temperatures. Coming soon to a video store near you are the blockbuster hits “Independence Day”, “The Nutty Professor”, “Dragonhearl”, and “Mission: Impossible”. Also being released are the hilarious comedies “Spy Hard”, “The Pallbearer”, and “Mrs. Winterbourne”. For the young at heart, we have the “Adventures of Pinnochio” and “Kazaam”, and for those who crave a different line of movies, we have “Striptease”, “Jane Eyre”, “Last Dance’*, and “The Phantom”. With Matt Sharp taking a break from side project The Rentals and Rivers Cuomo taking a semester off from Harvard, Brian Bell and Patrick Wilson rejoin their companions in a stunning sophomoric effort. The album features catchy words and even catchier music which are cemented together and fired in a kiln of pop genius. The resulting album is a heavy slab of delicious rock candy to be consumed in the joyful company of others, or by your sad self. The first single, “el Scorcho”. “Living next door to a safari park has its disadvan tages.” mmmm r tnnmntntti ir ■ “I hope you realize that filing bankruptcy ain’t cheap.". and more and The Darkness”, “Michael Collin's Story”, and “Two Days in the Valley”. Also be on the lookout for the soon to be released “Ransom”, “101 Dalmations”, and “Space Jam”. For those that prefer live theater over the big screen, you might want to check out the extended run of "Spooks." “Spooks” is showing at the Roadhouse Theater until November 17. Performances are Thursday through Saturday at Bp.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets can be reserved by calling the box office at 456-5656. Also, playing at the Erie Playhouse is the comedy, "Sylvia." The final shows arc November 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. Thurday, 8 p.m. Friday, and 5 p.m. Saturday. Call 454-2852 x4l if you would like to reserve tickets. Costs range from $l6 for adults, $l5 for seniors, and $8 for students. Finally, coming to the Warner Theater, are 8.8. King, who has shows from November 11-17 at 7 p.m., and George Carlin, who has a single show on November 24 at 7:30. Tickets for these shows can be purchased at the Civic Center box office or at any Ticketmaster location. November promises to be a blockbuster for movies and theater. So if you arc looking for dynamic entertainment, this is definitely the month for you! possesses the same musical silliness as “The Sweater Song” from their first record titled Weezer. Sharp, Bell and Cuomo sing the chorus, “I’m a lot like you so plcasc/hello/I’m hcrc/I’m waiting/I think I’d be good for you/and you’d be good for me.” Wilson is content just playing his drums. You cannot help but bob your head to the neat beat. The perfect compliment to the happy “cl Scorcho” is the sad “Across the Sea”. This song is a response to a letter from a fan. Rivers sings, “why are you so far away from mc?/I need help and you’re way across the sca/1 could never touch you/I think it would be wrong/I’ve got your letter/you’ve got my song." Reaching out to all those who want to be touched is a difficult thing for a popular band to do. Bickel Entertainment Editor The Studio Theatre at Penn State Erie will open its 1996-97 season with a production of Jean Anouilh’s Antigone. Originally produced over 2,400 years ago, this classic Greek tragedy tells the story of Antigone, one of the daughters of Opedipus, as she faces death rather than giving in to the decrees of her uncle, Creon, the “Why Bother?” is a song about Cuomo’s reluctance to get into a personal relationship. He sings, “why bother?/it’s gonna hurt me/it’s gonna hurt when you desert me/this happened to me twice before/it wori r r , f®f>pen to me anymore." These words are sung defiantly over top a stop-start song structure that would make Helmet proud. The last song on the album, “Butterfly”, is a brilliant acoustic piece. Gently strummed guitar music and sad, twisted lyrics make this the perfect denouement for an excellent album. If you liked Weezer's first album, you will really enjoy Pinkerton.
