Ashby Nmdnuse/Colegwn Photographer Championship Soccer Team to be Honored at Behrend Behrend- Alumni of various soccer teams at Penn State- Behrend will gather together on Saturday, Oct. S to don blue or white scrimmage vests and test their skills against each other in the popular annual alumni soccer game. The team will meet at 10 a.m. with kick-off slated for 10:30 a.m. At the game, which is being held in conjunction with the college’s Homecoming and Parents and Families Weekend, members of the 1971 Men’s Commonwealth Championship Soccer team will be recognized on the occasion of their 25th anniversary. Alumni from Texas, New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania are planning to attend. According to Coach Herb Lauffer, who coached the championship team and continues to coach at Penn State-Behrend today, the idea for a championship match between the teams of various commonwealth campuses began in 1970 when Penn State-Behrend hosted a tournament. “It went so well, that University Park sponsored a university-wide event involving all of the commonwealth campuses beginning the next year,” said Lauffer. “We won the title, and the following year the team following year became a 4- year institution, so we never played in the tournament again.” Among the alumni scheduled to return for the game is John Hoge, who was a freshman the year the team took the trophy. Hoge came to Penn State- Behrend from North Allegheny High School where the soccer team had not been very successful. At Behrend, we experienced success right off the bat, and that was very pleasant,” he said. Alumni matches started back in the mid-seventies according to Lauffer. Until about five years ago, the alumni played the Behrend Lions’ varsity team. “The core group of alumni who return for the alumni games is aging,” admitted Hoge. “We actually won some of the matches through the mid eighties, but it was getting increasingly difficult to give them a competitive game.” According to Hoge, the games today are informal and played for fun. Hoge is one of eight athletes who will be inducted into the Penn State-Behrend Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the Bel Aire Hotel on October 26.
