“She controls the net
well,” said junior co-captain
of the women’s volleyball
team Angie Georg of this
week’s Athlete of the Week
Erin McCormick.
This weekend at the
Baldwin-Wallace
Tournament, McCormick set
the Penn State Behrend
record for most blocks in a
career with 446.
She passed up Kathy Ott
who had 445 blocks in the
years 1981-84.
Ott still holds the record
for most blocks in a single
season, but McCormick had
331 last year and hopes to
break the record later on this
year.
“It feels great (to get the
record),” said McCormick
who last year led all of
Division 111 in blocks. “I
don’t try to go out and do it,
but I just go out and play and
whatever happens,
happens.”
through twelve matches
this year, McCormick has
117 blocks for a 9.7 blocks
per match average.

Pennsylvania Athletic
Trainers Week
Governor Tom Ridge
has declared the week of
September 22-28 Athletic
Trainers Week. The
purpose of the campaign is
to provide public
recognition to the
profession, as well as
prepare for future
legislative action
(licensure).
The certified athletic
trainer is a highly educated
and skilled professional
specializing in athletic
healthcare. The athletic
trainer functions as an
important member of the
athletic health care team in
secondary schools,
colleges and universities,
sports medicine clinics,
professional sports
programs, and other
athletic health care
settings.
Anyone who has ever
had an injury that requited
the care of an athletic
trainer knows just how
ck blocks her way to ATW
“She’s a great blocker in
the middle,” said teammate
Amy Good.
McCormick sat aside most
of her freshman year as she
watched all-star Carrie
Gizejka finish out her career
here at Behrend. Gizejka is
third on the all-time list for
blocks in a career with 402.
McCormick admits she
learned a lot for her.
“She gave me a lot of
inspiration and I picked up a
lot of skills from her,”
McCormick said.
Erin’s sophomore year she
was on fire as she blazed her
way to the Division 111
record. Much of the reason
for her success comes from
the intimidation she gives the
other team.
“She’s probably the tallest
player on the floor,” said
sophomore Jessica Brody.
“She’s very intense and that
scares the other team.”
Georg agreed saying
McCormick “gives us a
sense of confidence on the
floor. She’s gonna get her
hands on a lot of balls.”
McCormick has worked
hard throughout her career to
get better. Coach Gregory
important they are to
athletics and your
recovery. Be sure to
support the Athletic
Trainers Society not only
this week but also in the
future when they seek
licensure for their
profession.
Yankees play Orioles in
crucial AL East series
Old Mother Nature
rained on the Yanks, O's
parade Tuesday. The
teams will try to
commence their key AL
East three-game series
Wednesday in the Bronx.
With the Yankees holding
a three-game lead over
Baltimore, the Orioles
need a sweep in New
York. Weather permitting
the Yanks will send ace
Andy Petlitte up against
the steady Scott Erickson.
Baltimore still leads the
Seattle Mariners by 3-
games in the wild-card
Sports
helped her out this year by
moving her to up-front
outside hitter so she has
three rotations up front.
McCormick has adjusted
well to the change.
“It’s easier for us with one
setter,” replied McCormick.
“I adjust well to Angie’s
(set).”
In addition to leading the
team in blocking,
McCormick also leads the
team in kills with 108.
Good is right behind her
with 102.
“She has good court
sense,” replied Brody of the
6’ 2” McCormick. “If we
need a side out, she knows
exactely where to put the
ball.”
With still well over a year
and a half left at Behrend,
McCormick may have a
chance to double the career
record.
“We’re a young team
learning to play together
right now. We’re working
out the rough spots.”
Your next chance to see
McCormick in action is
Tuesday against Pitt-
Bradford.
