Racial abduction shocks locals
The abduction of an African-American man htit Thursday resulted
in the arrests of two brothers Tuesday evening in Ohio. The incident
took place in Springboro, about seven miles south of Albion in
Cambridge Springs.
Carl Morton, a 25-year-old Springboro man, was abducted last
week after leaving Mugsy's North Star Tavern and was later discover
by Don Mugridge, the tavern's owner. Mugridge said he "smelled
something fishy" when we saw Timothy and Bradley Braden follow
Carol Lee Morton out of the tavern. He then left the tavern a few
minutes later to see what, if anything, happened.
Morton was found walking down Route 18--naked, shivering and
confused—the victim of an alleged racially motivated attempted
homicide and kidnapping.
The Bradens were arrested by the Ashtabula County Sheriff's
Department after charges were filed by the Pennsylvania State Police.
They were detained in the Ashtabula County Jail and were scheduled
to be extradited to Pennsylvania Wednesday.
According to Pennsylvania State Police spokeperson Tpr. John
Ochsc said the brothers face charges of kidnapping, criminal attempted
homicide, terroristic threats, criminal conspiracy, reckless
endangerment, aggravated assault and ethnic intimidation.
The charges stem from an investigation of the incident that began
at the tavern last week. Ochs said the acts allegedly were done with
"malicious intent toward the race, color, religion of another
Killer of Michael Jordan's father
gets life sentence
The man accused of killing Michael Jordan's father avoided the
death penalty because the jury was unsure he pulled the trigger, the
jury forewoman said.
Followinig 3 1/2 hours of deliberations, the jury sentenced Daniel
Andre Green to life in prison. Omen was convicted of the killing and
robbing ofJorclan in July 1995. He received 10 years for conspiracy
to commit robbery. Green may be eligible for parole in 20 years.
Co-defendent Larry Martin Demery pleaded guilty to murder, armed
robbery and conspiracy last year and agreed to testify against Green.
Demery told jurors That he watched in surprise as Green shot Jordan
with a .38-caliber pistol as Jordan awoke from a roadside nap in his
$40,000 Lexus.
Mourning for George Burns
George Burns was laid to rest this week during a small, simple
funeral service. Burns, 100, was laid to rest beside his beloved Gracie
in a hilltop crypt.
Burns, who passed away Saturday, was mourned Tuesday at an
invitation-only funeral attended only by family and close friends.
The 70 mourners included Ronald J. Burns and Sandra Jean Bums,
the entertainer's son and daughter, plus seven grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
The service ended with a show-biz bang—the skies darkened and rain
gan to fall as the funeral ended.
Burns had been unable to work since 1994, when he fell at his
ome. His 100th birthday shows had been cancelled due to failing
health. Burns was unable to even be a spectator at a gala held in his
honor shortly before his birthday.

However, Flaska said the comptuty would be willing to change the
label.
The label also shows a real frog with its right arm turned upward
and its middle toe extended.
The beer is brewed in Michigan and is sold in six other states:
Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Virginia, Rhock Island and Florida.
Ohicrrefused to sell it because of the label.

Grant endowed
New scholarship will
benefit biology majors'
research
BEHREND-Penn State Erie,
The Behrend College, is pleased
to announce that Mrs. John
Herbert has endowed a
scholarship at the College. The
scholarship is designed in
memory of her husband to honor
and recognize outstanding
achievement by full-time, four
year majors at Penn State-
Behrend, and will support
undergraduate research.
Rhonda Dennison, a senior
biology major from
Punxsutawney, Pa., is the first
recipient of the undergraduate
research grant for her project,
"Search for Antimicrobial
Substances in Amphibian Skin
Secretions." Dennison will
present her findings at the Senior
Seminar presentation this spring
Women's
Film
Series
BEHREND-The 1995-96
Women's Film Series will begin
at Penn State Erie, The Behnni
College, featuring A Geisha next
Tuesday. The film begins at 7
p.m. in the Reed Lecture Hall.
Admission is free and open to
the public.
A Geisha, directed by Kenji
Mizoguchi, was called "one of
the greatest film makers of all
time" by the New York Times.
Produced in 1953, it did not reach
the United States until 1976.
A Geisha is about the social
revolution taking place in 1953,
and the friendship between an
older geisha and a 16-year old girl
who is training to be a geisha but
must sell her body to survive.
The film is described by the New
Yorker as "not only one of
Mizoguchi's masterpieces but
also one of the few perfectly
tuned works of sensibility in the
twentieth century visual arts."
Dr. • Ursula Davis, assistant
professor of communications at
Penn State-Behrend, will
introduce the showing of A
Geisha. A Behrend faculty
member will lead a discussion
afterwards.
The Women's film series will
continue Tuesday, April 2 with
Bhaja on the Beach. The third
film, Ccfe Au Lail, a French
version of Splice Lee's She Gotta
Have It, will be shown Tuesday,
April 16. Both films begin at 7
p.m. in the Reed Lecture Hall.
The Women's Film Series is
sponsored by the Penn State-
Behrend Office of Student
Activities. For more

been committed to Penn State for
many years and have been helpful

Behrend provost and dean.
The undergraduate research
grant will be called the John and
Jane Herbert Undergraduate
Research Award. According to
Lilley, "Undergraduate research,
with the support of faculty
scholars, is one of the most
effective ways for students to
learn and to prepare for major
caxeers."

Sununu
cancelled
BEHREND-Governor John
Sununu, former governor of New
Hampshire and Chief of Staff for
President George Bush, has had
to cancel his appearance at the
Pietuail College, originally
scheduled for tonight.
The cancellation is the result o
a fall Sununu had resulting in
seven broken ribs and a bruised
spleen. His booking agency
expects he will be hospitalized
for several weeks.
Penn State-Behrend will
attempt to reschedule his
appearance for a later date.
